Need help finding out how old a 22 Marlin long rifle is?
Q. The rifle has no serial number, all that's on the gun in writing is 22 long rifle and Marlins logo and address.
Asked by Ray - Wed Nov 12 17:54:51 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If it does not have a serial number, it predates GCA 68 so it was made before 1968. Beyond that it will be hard to determine when the gun was made, you might be able to track some of the part changes to narrow down the time frame.

What's the biggest game you would hunt with a 22 long rifle..?
Q. I just received a 22 long rifle that was passed down from my grandfather.. It's a Ranger Model 103-13... What's the biggest game I would be able to use it on? I'm not planning on selling it, but how much do you think it might be worth?
Asked by Jason H - Sun Jul 13 00:49:17 2008 - - 26 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Ranger 103-13 cross-reference list it as a Marlin Model 81. Look and see if your gun looks like the one I'm linking. Sears had gun makers like Marlin make them guns to sell, just changing the name and model number. The Ranger brand will be worth a bit less in most cases, so if yours is only worth about $100 at best. But since it was your grandfathers, to you it is priceless, take care of it always. The biggest thing I've taken with a .22 LR has been jackrabbits. Animals bigger require more power.

Can a regular foldable bipod fit any .22 long rifle?
Q. Can one fit any .22 long rifle or do you have to get a specific bipod for a specific gun?
Asked by wweezy - Wed Apr 1 00:02:08 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are three types of bipod mounts for the most part. Ones that clamp around the barrel (which, by the way, won't work with most tubular magazine .22's), the swing swivel stud mount, and the picatinny rail mount. Stay away from barrel clamp bipods - generally the pressure exerted on the barrel when using the bipod will adversely affect accuracy. If your .22 has a sling swivel stud on the forearm, you can choose this mount and it works well. If you don't have a sling swivel stud, they are very easy to install yourself. The third type is the picatinny rail mount, (a rail is also easy to install if your .22 doesn't already have one).

A. Looking at ballistic bullet drop rate tables, it looks like 4.7 is probably the amount of inches the bullet will drop at a distance of 50 yards if fired flat.

What is the best .22 long rifle ammunition used to kill a coyote?
Q. when i say best, i mean i dont want them to suffer even when i shoot them behind the ear. i've heard that CCI stingers work good, but i've also heard that .22 hollow point yellow jackets are better. there is a wide variety of rim fire ammuntion but i would like to know whats best so i dont have to buy them all. and yes i'm shooting under 50 yards. Thanks

A. I've personal used a .22 LR Yellow Jacket Hollow Point to kill a 200 lbs Russian boar, I put 2 rounds in it in rapid succession, one round went through and through while the other was found in the opposite rib cage, a perfectly expanded round. So who ever says you can't hunt coyote with a .22 LR is obviously on a macho trip with larger rounds. I would go with the Yellow Jacket OR the .22 LR Federal Spitfire. Both rounds have a muzzle velocity of 1,500fps, the difference is that the Yellow Jacket is a truncated tip hollow point and weighs 31gr, while the Spitfire is round tip hollow point and weighs 33gr. By the way, the Yellow Jacket expanded to over twice the original diameter, providing plenty of damage, the vital organs were complete… [cont.]

Does anyone know value of a 1951 Winchester 75 22 long rifle target bolt action?
Q. It has been in my closet for 35 years and is in good condition. I am going to sell it and don't know what to ask. Any suggestions? I have found prices on internet from $550 to $1500 but can't find the exact gun? Help? Serial number is 76235 so I think it is 1951.

A. Look around. Gunbroker.com will give you an "ebay" feel for a price but may not be entirely reliable. Also, you may want to edit your posting and take off the serial number. NEVER give out the complete serial number to ANY firearm like that. Just some wise advice :o)

Q. How long is it good for if left in original boxes in good dry conditions?

A. There is no expiration date stamped on ammunition for a reason, if it is properly stored and not subjected to undue vibration, it will last forever.

A. If it shoots good from your gun, then it is good. 22's have their own preference on ammos. An ammo that shoots great in one gun might not shoot well in another. I have a 22 that likes nothing but PMC ammos. I have another 22 which prefers Federals. I also have a 22 that shoots most ammo pretty much the same. I think you should let your gun tell you what it likes. It knows a lot more about what it likes and don't likes than any of us. Once you found your gun's ammo preference, you should write down the lot number and buy as many as you could from that lot. 22 ammo from different batches could shoot a little differently. Since you want to shoot in a match, you want your ammo to be as consistent as possible. PS: Properly stored 22 ammo… [cont.]

A. Most repeating tube fed are made today for long rifle only. You can't go wrong using long rifles. Years ago the tubular repeaters were often advertised with mix or match. Put in shorts, longs and long rifles without malfunction. The Remington Nylon 66 to name one. Yours may take all three.EDIT google 22 rifle tubular magazines in 1970. They tell you all three.

Q. What bullet would take down a Raccoon easier 17 Hmr or 22 long rifle?
Asked by 72 chevelle - Sun Nov 1 22:27:14 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Either will work. A .22 LR will do the trick cheaper, but a .17 HMR can do it from a longer distance. A .22 could accurately drop it out to ~100 yards with your average rifle. A .17 HMR could do it out to 200 yards on a calm day. I would say get the .22, because its cheaper (~5 cents as opposed to ~20 cents). A .22 can also be used in a lot of pistols and rifles, while .17 HMR is mainly a bolt action rifle round.

what spot in the body besides the head will drop a deer in its tracks with a 22 long rifle?
Q. i was just wondering because people always say that the head is the only place that a deer can be killed with a 22
Asked by Evan - Fri Jul 2 18:23:05 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First, I would never intentionally aim for a deer's head with my high power rifle because I know I would have a lower chance to drop it than if I aimed for the vitals. Second, my rifle is quite a bit, a hell of a lot, more powerful than any .22 LR or .22 magnum. Third, It's most likely illegal where you are to hunt deer with a .22. A .22's report is pretty unique. If there is a warden within ear shot you can bet he's going to find you. Fourth, a decent .243 can be purchased for nearly the same price as a .22. Sure, ammo is more expensive. But it is way cheaper than the fine, loss of your gun, truck, jail time and restitution you will have once you're been prosecuted. Also, I think my time is one of the most valuable things I own.… [cont.]

Asked by Tanner B - Sat Jul 3 11:34:55 2010 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. NO. Some revolver are made with 2 cylinders for using 22LR in one and 22 mag in the other, but in a rifle you should only use the ammo it's made for. The case of a 22 mag is bigger around than a 22lr case is, you will have a lot of looseness in the chamber, the cartridge won't sit in there straight, plus there is the long jump the bullet would have to take to get through the chamber to get to the rifling of the barrel, all that combined equals excessive leading, and possible premature erosion of rifle throat. Just don't do it.

Anybody Try Hunting Coyotes with a .22 Long Rifle Rifle?
Q. I haven't tried to hunt coyotes with a .22 Long Rifle Rifle myself, but I've heard it can be done with shots to the neck and head. Has anyone tried this?
Asked by super682003 - Thu Dec 6 02:03:36 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's not that you can't, it's that you probably shouldn't. Hunters, even varmit hunters, have an obligation to as quick a kill as possible. A .22LR simply does not have the power to effectively drop dead a coyote quickly. A .17 would be better or even .22mag. Problem with all these is range...you really want to move up a few calibers in power to get out to 200-300. Coyotes are nasty filthy varmits, but they are smart in keeping away from you and your gun.

A. Not to put you or your rifle down. But if the barrel isn't bent then it shoots straight. You need to practice your breathing. Take a deep breath and let out about half of your air. Then just squeeze the trigger. Practice practice practice. Thats all anyone can recommend.. If you want to save for a different rifle thats fine too. But weather you use iron sights or put a scope on your rifle. Even now at 42 years old I have a tendency to jerk the trigger which will cause my shot to move up and to the right by about 6 inches at 100 yards. If you shoot as often as you say you do then I would say its the breathing more than anything.

Q. I squirrel hunt alot(like 4 days a week) and have a semi automatic remington .22. Its just not accurate enough to get a squirrel from over 25 yards. Its just not consistent. Should i sell my Rem and buy the Win. Wildcat?

Answer:In a few places I have been hunting I felt I was too close to houses to use a .22 simply because a ricochet off a branch cannot be accounted for. Always know where your projectile will end up, be aware that a .. 22 LR. can travel ...
