A. I've got a Ruger M77 Mk.II myself in 7mm Rem. Mag. It's paired up with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40. I love it. There isn't anything wrong at all with the choice you've made. Go for it and don't look back.

Good 7mm mag rifle for less than $800?
Q. What brand of rifle would be good to get a 7mm mag in? I usually stick with stainless guns. I will be hunting a field with shots at 500 yards for whitetail deer. I am looking at either a Browning or Tikka... I live in South Georgia hunting a peanut field, I have a box-stand set up in the corner of the field, I did some ranging this past weekend, it is 1000+ yards from side to side. Recoil is not a problem either.

A. The better and best choice for you is to consider the Savage Model GXP3 with Accu-trigger, mounted with a 3X9 variable scope, and mounted and bore sighted in 7mm Magnum for ONLY $633.00 Dollars...***

I accidentally fired a .270 bullet through a Rem 7mm Mag Rifle. Should I be concerned about the next round?
Q. The rifle appears to be undamaged. I had shot about two dozen rounds sighting in the rifle, when I accidentally grabbed a .270 round, which must be similar in length to a 7mm Mag round. The gun fired, and hot gas shot out the back (into my cheek) and smoke was around the chamber. I was able to pop the cartridge out with a cleaning rod without too much difficulty, and the bullet had been expelled. The casing was torn from the gas expanding, but the bolt on the rifle seems to be fine, and the rifle appears to be no worse for wear. Should I have the rifle professionally examined before I re-fire? I was going to fire off a round from a distance with a string and see how that goes. I feel lucky that the barrel did not explode in my face!… [cont.]

A. As a qualified Gunsmith, personsally I would take it to a local Gunsmith and have it checked out before you take it hunting or shoot it again. If in fact there are "stress fractures" referred to as "striation cracks", the will be difficult to see with the naked eye. A magnifying Fiber Optic device is used with an artificial built in light source, with magnification adjustment to examine/scope and check the Bolt, chamber, throat & leade (The area just in front of the chamber where the rifling begins) for any surface damage and/or fine hairline cracks...Not every Gunsmith has this equipment, so it might take you a while to locate a Gunsmith equipped to do this.Chamber castings are useless to diagnose any of these problems, and Magna Fluxing… [cont.]

7mm Rem Mag Shooters can you help?
Q. I have browning Medallion 7mm mag rifle has 26" barrel what grain bullet gives your rifle the tightest group and which brand is it.Do you really believe in using only ballastic tip bullet for long range shooting using ballastic chart..Any Info would help.Thank you.
Asked by Tarzan - Wed Nov 26 23:19:05 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Many things make for a tight group, probably the most important being the shooter. How secure the rest is, quality of scope/mounts, and not overheating the barrel are also factors. For hunting, I prefer well constructed hunting bullets, such as Nosler Partition, CCI Grand Slam. Ballistic charts work, but you need muzzle velocity, and bullet make. You can typically find specific ballistic charts in reloading books, such as Hornady and Speer. My Browning Hunter in 7mm Rem Mag likes 175 gr Nos Partitions, but that doesn't mean yours will.

Q. I'm getting ready to get a hunting rifle and have it narrowed down to 3 Cals, .264 Win Mag, 7mm Mag, .300 Mag? I'll be hunting deer and elk mainly. Which rifle would be the best for these choosings also. Thanks for any help.

A. Your lucky day mate - I have owned all three! Nix the .264 Win. Selecton of reloading bullets is bad, selection of factory ammo is worse, much much worse. You travel to another state to hunt and you probalby won't be able to bring the ammo on the plane or buy it where you land. You won't much of it where I live in Alaska if you came up here. Both 7mm and 300 mags are good choices. If you never, ever, plan to visit Alaska or hunt brown bear or moose - go with the 7mm Mag. Very flat shooting and with a little practice nearly anyone can hit a coffee can at 500 yards. It has enough retained energy to drop an elk or deer at that distance. If you might hunt brown bear or come to Alaska for bear or moose - you absolutly need the 300 Mag.… [cont.]

Q. can a 7mm rem mag use large rifle primers instead of magnums?
Asked by Redmond - Fri Nov 6 12:55:24 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. sure can, actually a lot of manuals recommend them most people prefer standard primers for most applications, exceptions being heavy powder loads, especially with spherical powders and for use in very cold weather (say 0* F). Places where the slightly "hotter" spark makes a difference. Often misusing magnum primers can cause pressure spikes and lead to premature wear. having "magnum" in the cartridge name does not necessarily mean that you need a magnum primer

7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag rifle better for long Range shooting?
Q. I had been shooting 30-06 so far but now i wanna upgrade my shooting and wanna get a more range covering rifle for over 500 yds.So what would you suggest me to buy among these two?what rifle twist and barrel length would you recommend on these calibers. So far i've studied, all the ballistic charts were for 22" barrel do you know any web site were they have it for 24" barrel also .thank you

A. Brutus, im sorry, but you couldnt be more wrong(I would have called you an idiot, but that would be abusive) The 7mm Rem Mag. Is MY choice of the three, BUT, the 300win Mag is ballistically superior to the 7mm in velocity and energy. In comparing the 7mm and the .300 with 150 gr bullets at 500 yards, the .300 has 10 fps more and 10 more ft lbs energy, you go heavier, the 300 wins all out. The .270 is no comparison to either of the bigger rounds.

A. I can't recommend the 770, it isn't a rifle that meets my standards at all-it has poor fit and finish, the bolt is abysmal, the stock is plastic in a bad way with poor sling mounts, and the scope on them is about $30 retail. If anything serious happens,it is cheaper to toss the rifle than have a gunsmith work on-it has press fit action-barrel assembly. In the same price range the Marlin XL7 is a decent economic rifle, nothing fancy but that goes with the territory-at least the bolt is workable and there are some good manufacturing steps involved. The Mossberg ATR has gotten a slight rework, with new trigger (similar to the Savage Accu-Trigger), and it is better than the 770,but I'm not happy with the poor rear bridge support for the bolt-that… [cont.]

What is a Winchester Model 70 7mm magnum worth?
Q. What would be the value of a Winchester Model 70 7mm mag, serial number 812311( which places date of manufacture in 1966), with a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5 x 8 scope. Both rifle and scope are in very good condition with very little use, probably less then 100 rounds fired through the barrel.

A. What grade is it (ie. safari, classic)? This could be worth 800$+ if you have cleaned the bore and got rid of surface rust.

Recoil with varying grain sizes in a 7mm mag?

Also if anyone is familiar with federal and more specifically with very particular types of ammo like the link refers to, how exactly do you go about ordering these, just call up a dealer and ask them to order them, I was wondering about price. A. Depending on what you are shooting now, 110gr tsx should have a bit less felt recoil. Now, since you mention Remington's reduced recoil loads, I have to ask, Why are you shooting a 7mm Remington Magnum if recoil is a concern? Have you thought about stepping down to a .280 Remington, 7x57 or 7mm-08. For prices of ammunition, check out midwayusa.com, they are fairly competitive. The TSX is a premium bullet and will be quite expensive to shoot at varmints. It is a tough bullet so will likely pass clean through with minimal expansion. If I wanted to use a 7mm mag as a long range varmint rifle, I would find the lightest hornady vmax or nosler partition, which will probably be around 120grs and use those for long range varminting...they… [cont.]

A. DCA has it right with the 7mm Mag being a wonderful choice for a long range weapon (I assume you mean the 7mm Remington Mag in a Ruger Model 77 rifle). Biggest thing you are going to run into is that the best long range shooting rifle isn't always the best rifle for hunting. The 7 Mag does both jobs admirably, up to and including moose, elk and bear;but most humane and ethical hunting shots are within 300 yards, possibly 400 on a good day when you really know the gun and conditions, and a perfect shot is available. To me a long shot on deer is 300 yards max, elk is 400 yards, only because the margin of error is so much greater on a larger target. You get a quartering shot at 200 yards and you better be sure of your shot placement, even… [cont.]

Q. I own a 7mm rem mag in a rem 700 BDL and is topped with a cheap tasco at the moment. I am currently shooting 140. grain soft points and 160 grain accubonds. I can get real good groups with these bullets but the problem is after a long day of shooting the groups get worse. Now i thought i was me at first so i went home and went back to the range 2 days later and the groups just kept getting worse. I hate the scope on top of my rifle and i want to change it. Now i cant afford much at the moment so i looking for a good cheap scope. I came across a Nikon Buckmaster and the reviews for the scope is great, and the price is even better. I was looking at a 4.5x-14x with 40mm obj lens and side focus and can get either BDC, Mil dot or just plex… [cont.]

Hunting Question, 7mm Rem Mag, .308 or .30.06?
Q. Greetings. I'm about to invest in my first rifle. I live i Norway, and will use this rifle mainly for Big game hunting. First and foremost, Caribous, beaver but maybe one day, also moose. My question is, what caliber should i choose for best distance and take down capacity. I have looked at following calibers, the 7mm rem mag, .308 and finally the .30-06 Do you guys have any suggestions on what calibre i should invest in? thx

A. Greetings and salutations from the great State of Texas: Any of the three calibers you are inquiring about will work fine for big game such as Caribou and Moose. The 7mm Remington Magnum is an over-kill for beaver (and I'll bet it would also tear-up the pelt very badly). With either one of the .30 calibers (.308 or .30-06) you could use full metal jacket bullets for beaver and hunting rounds for Caribou, etc. In the USA the venerable .30-06 Springfield is considered the best all-around big game hunting caliber. This is because of the great variety of bullet weights available for the '06. Currently I am using the 180 grain Winchester brand bullets in mine and these should work fine for Caribou and even Moose. The 7mm Remington Magnum… [cont.]

My shoulder gets bruised every time I fire my rifle/shotgun?
Q. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to prevent this? Shotgun are 12ga Rifles are 7mm Mag and 30-06. And all weapons have buttpads on them. The next day after shooting more than 4 shots out of either weapon I cant fire them again for a week or so cause my shoulders too bruised to put the rifle against. I have shot rifles alot and my uncle doesnt have this problem and says im holding the rifle correctly. Anyone have any suggestions? im 6'5" over 250lbs so id say im a fairly large person. And yes my torso is kinda weird, I have trouble finding shirts that fit me.

A. I have a rather staggering number of old military rifles and they always have those slippery metal buttplates. I have found that the Limbsaver or Pachemeyer Deflector slip on recoil pads add a tad more length to a too short military one-size-fits-all stock and makes them fun to shoot; yes, even the Mosin-Nagant 44. Even if your rifles have the soft buttpads on them from the factory or whatever you can slip one of these on. If it makes it too long just remove the screws and take off the existing buttplate and install the slipon over the wood to match up the length. Give one a try; if it can make a short barreled Brazilan mauser carbine chambered for 30-06 manageable then yours should be a snap.

Rifle or a pistol?
Q. Springfield Armory XD 45 Service model OR Remington 700 .308 bolt action rifle.(dont know which version 700 I want so info on that will be helpful too) I will be getting both eventually, but dont know which one I want now. The firearms I currently own are: S&W 65-4 .357Mag. Revolver Remington 870 Express 12ga Shotgun Remington 770 7mm Mag. Bolt Action Rifle(SUCKS!) Thanks in advance to everyone who answers uhh are you a moron? The 770 was a mistake by remington but it doesnt mean ALL of their firearms suck. The 700 is a completely diferent rifle from the 770. They named it a 770 so people would think it was the upgraded version of the 700 cause the 700 is a damn good rifle and a lot of people fell for it, me included. If the 700 is… [cont.]

A. Given the fact that you already have a viable handgun in the .357 S&W, and that you're unhappy with the Rem 770, I'd go with the rifle first. The .308 is an excellent and versatile cartridge, the Rem 700 is an excellent rifle, and this will give you a good excuse to dump the 770. If you're like me, I never sell a gun unless I really don't like it, and that's only happened twice in 70+ years.
