7mm Mag rifle- Low recoil rounds Help?
Q. I hunt with a 7mm mag rifle. If I use low recoil bullets (which only seem to have about half the gunpowder.) Will this effect my shot at all? especially long range? Any info on low-recoil rounds useful. Thanks

A. Actually, you'd be surprised how little the difference is in the amount of propellant. Of course, it's going to be slower with the same bullet weight than a full charge, so it won't shoot as flat. Maybe not now, but one of these days you ought to get into handloading. It's quite an education. Once you get to a certain point, cartridges need about 10% more propellant for 2% more velocity, and the whole "efficiency" argument becomes starkly clear on your chronograph. And those of us who do it wouldn't be caught dead looking at the works of fiction that go under the heading of "ballistics tables." If you aren't ready to start handloading, I'd encourage you at least to start chronographing your loads and shooting enough to develop your own,… [cont.]

A. I've got a Ruger M77 Mk.II myself in 7mm Rem. Mag. It's paired up with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40. I love it. There isn't anything wrong at all with the choice you've made. Go for it and don't look back.

I accidentally fired a .270 bullet through a Rem 7mm Mag Rifle. Should I be concerned about the next round?
Q. The rifle appears to be undamaged. I had shot about two dozen rounds sighting in the rifle, when I accidentally grabbed a .270 round, which must be similar in length to a 7mm Mag round. The gun fired, and hot gas shot out the back (into my cheek) and smoke was around the chamber. I was able to pop the cartridge out with a cleaning rod without too much difficulty, and the bullet had been expelled. The casing was torn from the gas expanding, but the bolt on the rifle seems to be fine, and the rifle appears to be no worse for wear. Should I have the rifle professionally examined before I re-fire? I was going to fire off a round from a distance with a string and see how that goes. I feel lucky that the barrel did not explode in my face!… [cont.]

A. As a qualified Gunsmith, personsally I would take it to a local Gunsmith and have it checked out before you take it hunting or shoot it again. If in fact there are "stress fractures" referred to as "striation cracks", the will be difficult to see with the naked eye. A magnifying Fiber Optic device is used with an artificial built in light source, with magnification adjustment to examine/scope and check the Bolt, chamber, throat & leade (The area just in front of the chamber where the rifling begins) for any surface damage and/or fine hairline cracks...Not every Gunsmith has this equipment, so it might take you a while to locate a Gunsmith equipped to do this.Chamber castings are useless to diagnose any of these problems, and Magna Fluxing… [cont.]

A. I bought a new Winchester model 70 in 7 mag. three years ago. As soon as I got in my tree stand I did not like the added length of the rifle at all. I shot 3 deer in 2 days with it & did not like the results. The bullet was so fast that the deer did not seem to be hit at all. I thought I missed but had actually made prefect double lung shots on all 3. All 3 only ran between 60 & 80 yards, which was straight into a thicket I was hunting next to. The blood trail was very sparse, only small drops about 10 yards apart. I found the deer easly but if they would have ran more or made a few turns it would have been questionable. I traded the rifle the second evening to a guy in my camp for an old boat. I've got a 30 06 Remington 700 (from… [cont.]

A. I've hunted with both for a pile of years...and I would have to say Mountain Man and Doc are on the same page as I. A 7mm is a great rifle, but a Muzzleloader is the fundamental of building-blocks of good shooting. Also, you can shoot more rounds without the side-effects of a shooting a mag. Other than that, you can also hunt more seasons. (especially in Wis.)

A. Brutus, im sorry, but you couldnt be more wrong(I would have called you an idiot, but that would be abusive) The 7mm Rem Mag. Is MY choice of the three, BUT, the 300win Mag is ballistically superior to the 7mm in velocity and energy. In comparing the 7mm and the .300 with 150 gr bullets at 500 yards, the .300 has 10 fps more and 10 more ft lbs energy, you go heavier, the 300 wins all out. The .270 is no comparison to either of the bigger rounds.

A. The only rifle of the three you mentioned that comes with a "Boss"(Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System) installed are the Browning Boss Model Rifles, and the Brownings don't have Bull Barrels...It would be impractical to have a Bull barreled rifle with a "Boss" type system installed anyway...The Bull barrel would defeat the Boss system from reducing felt recoil...

A. Both are great calibers. Both work at the extent of each others ranges. The 150's to 175's in a preimium controlled bullet work best for deep reliable penetration for the 7mm mag. The 300 offers heavier weights and speeds them along a little faster. The real difference being recoil in the two and a edge with the heavier bullets in the 300 so you wouldn't feel to under gunned if the bear hunt ever pops into the picture. I'd put my money on the 300 for the extra versatility with all the great 30 caliber bullet weights.

Looking to get a new rifle but cant decide between a 7mm Remington Magnum or a .300 Win Mag?
Q. I'm from Oregon and mainly hunt in the Coast Range and the Cascades I currently hunt with a .308 Win which i know is pretty versatile like the .06. I want something that wont be over kill on a Black Tail but can drop an Elk with one shot. (I realize that bullet placement plays a huge role in how effective the shot is).
Asked by Trey French - Sat Jul 3 02:15:01 2010 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I will tell you this now: the .300 Win Mag is overkill for everything accept for bears. It has hefty recoil. Ammo is $40-50 a box. The cartridge was origianaly designed for bear, and thats IMO what it should stick to. Yes, it can be used for deer, but you will also find that a good 8-12in circle of meat missing. The 7mm was designed to fix that problem by not being too bad of overkill for deer with lighter loads, and heavy loads allow for bigger game to be taken with eas, like elk or bear. When hunting brown bear, of the bigger sort, good shot placement is vital. With that knowledge, the 7mm can take any game in North America. Dont get me wrong, so can the .300, but will be overkill and overpriced for a lot of the smaller game. Now let… [cont.]

A. Used guns are like used cars: if you find the right buyer, you can get top dollar, which might be as much as $700 for that package. Otherwise, it's a matter of finding someone who's willing to pay anything for it. If a new rifle costs dealers $300, then they won't offer you more than 75% of $300. Why would they pay more? The 'scope is nice. If nobody wants the package, try dismounting the scope and selling it separately.

A. My short answer is the '06. Really though you should talk to hunters in your group or people that hunt in similar situations that you will experience. There is no substitute for experience in this area. These people who are talking about 300+ yard shots do not hunt your neighborhood. I have hunted WI every year since 1970. I have killed well over 60 deer with a rifle in that time and have never had a shot over 175 yards. Most are well under 100, many at less than 50 yards. I have always considered PA to be similar to WI. Good Luck!

A. DCA has it right with the 7mm Mag being a wonderful choice for a long range weapon (I assume you mean the 7mm Remington Mag in a Ruger Model 77 rifle). Biggest thing you are going to run into is that the best long range shooting rifle isn't always the best rifle for hunting. The 7 Mag does both jobs admirably, up to and including moose, elk and bear;but most humane and ethical hunting shots are within 300 yards, possibly 400 on a good day when you really know the gun and conditions, and a perfect shot is available. To me a long shot on deer is 300 yards max, elk is 400 yards, only because the margin of error is so much greater on a larger target. You get a quartering shot at 200 yards and you better be sure of your shot placement, even… [cont.]

Asked by peacefullgunner - Sun Oct 4 17:47:38 2009 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The 7mm Rem. Mag. will have a bit more recoil and have a slight increase in velocity. The 30-06 has a bigger slug and has been used for decades for big game. Pretty much every species in America has been shot by a 30-06. The 7mm Rem mag is also very popular and would be effective for all North American game. One thing to consider is that factory ammo for the 30-06 will be quite a bit cheaper and it would also be cheaper to reload since it burns less powder. Both calibers are widely available, accurate and excellent deer rifles. One thing to remember always wear ear plugs if I was gonna shot a Browning with a BOSS system because they are loud.

If they did, my wife would have bought me one 30 years ago and sold the other two dozen in the safe. "Best" rifle depends on what your skills are. Example, I shoot NRA Highpower Rifle - this is 200, 300 and 600 yard competition with open sights - no scope. With a scope - I can put 4 rounds inside the same hole at 200 yards and easily hit coffee cup sized targets at 600.
