The landlord is responsible for repairing the problem and fixing the damage. The landlord is NOT responsible for anything that gets damaged inside. All renters should purchase "renters insurance" it is just like home owners insurance where as it covers your belongings against damage or theft. Most insurance companies carry renters insurance... So I would say move whatever is valuable -- takes ALOT for a ceiling to fall so you are probably safe for the mean time... Q. Related to the above - if the markets completely collapse will banks and building societies go bust? Does this mean that any money saved in accounts not linked to stocks and shares (for example, a cash isa) will not be able to be withdrawn as people will panic and attempt to remove all their funds from a bank / building society? This sounds crazy, but if such a scenario was to happen, would it actually be wise to remove money from a bank before a collapse and store in a pilow under the bed?! The Bear Stern incident would have been the trigger to set your scenario in motion if it had not been for the Fed and their unprecedented move that delayed the melt down.
