Q. i have a cut cornea and ulcer in my eye and some of the skin has been burned off my eye and i was just curious if this will affect my eye sight in the future i now have 20/20 well before i got chemicals sprayed in my eye but the doctor said this will be a long term healing process but he wont tell me if it will affect my vision in the future he just tells me that i wont be blind and he tells me it aint healing so do you think i will need surgery or what are the options thanks just me

A. I seriously don't think anyone here could second guess your Opthalmologist who is treating you. Those are questions only he could answer. Being as it isn't healing surely complicates things.

Question regarding eyesight in the RAF
Q. I am posting this on behalf of someone: I am hoping to join the RAF as a doctor , but might consider trying to become a pilot , i know you cant become a pilot if your eyesight doesnt meet the standards required , but what if i had corrective laser eye surgery? Eyesight For some jobs including Pilot your eyesight needs to meet certain standards. If you wear glasses, you can work for the RAF but this may affect which roles you can apply for. If you are colour blind, you will not be able to join the RAF as a Firefighter, Weapon Technician, Aircraft Technician (Mechanical) or Aircraft Technician (Avionics). To join as a Pilot or an Engineer Officer, you'll do a colour perception test. It's only by doing this test that we can decide… [cont.]

A. I joined the navy as a medic last year and I understand that eyesight requirements are the same for all three services. All branches require a minimum eye sight requirement, which is slightly higher in the right eye because that is the eye you use to aim a rifle (yes, even medics have to be able to see well enough to shoot). I have checked since joining and now that I am in, they are happy for me to have whatever laser eye surgery I like. The best thing you can do is to go to an AFCO and get the eyesight form, go to your opticians and get tested and then go back to the AFCO and ask them what your options are with this eyesight. They probably won't know, so tell them to get on the phone and don't leave until you have all your answers. [cont.]

What sort of health issues does/did your miniature Schnauzer have?
Q. I'm just trying to see what other owners have dealt with along the line of health issues with their miniature Schnauzers. Not Standards or others, but purebred minis. After 9.5 years, we just lost our sweet girl overnight 11/30-12/1. What's killing me the most is that the vet said she was doing better and would be coming home the next day. Well, she came home, but to be buried. She was purchased at a pet shop. I KNOW, so the last thing I need is someone finger-wagging and saying how it's "Wrong". Trust me, I KNOW. The only regret I don't have is of her temperament/disposition. Nobody would ever have found a sweeter, better-natured dog. She was playful and active up until 3 days before she died. We as a family are heartbroken and while… [cont.]

A. I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what I would be like without my little guy. I have a 9 year old mini schnauzer and the only real problem he has is that he develops cysts all over his skin. He actually got one surgically removed because it was growing too quickly and now he has 3 more in different places. We're told that they're completely benign and don't really harm him in any way. Other than that..he's had a few gastrointestinal problems because he likes to get into everything and eat it, but nothing genetically I don't think. We also got him at a pet store (which i will never do again) but he's definitely extremely perky.

A. Sarah, I am so sorry that you have to endure this difficult decision. Your cat has lived a long life, longer than most. Since I have not seen your cat I can't offer an answer but I have a feeling you do. Re-read your question then answer it as if it were someone else asking. This is one of the most difficult times with pets. You don't really want to let them go but you know death is inevitable. I am so sorry. She knows she is loved, if that helps.

I have had a Corneal Ulcer twice in my right eye, how do you take care of your contact lenses to prevent this?
Q. How do you clean your contact lense? When is the right time to take them out after school when i get home, because sometimes I would wear contacts untll i take them off before sleeping. My doctor Dr.David W. Gordon OD said the time period to keep the lenses is 1 to 2 weeks and then dispose them so my eyes are prevented from anything, like what i had twice a corneal ulcer. I wear them everyday sometimes even wear it for more than 14 hours from school morning to after school and untill 9,10 or 11 at night when i go to sleep.

EYE PROBLEMS ON AN ENGLISH BULL DOG?
Q. Hello, I own a 1 year old English Bull Dog. He has developed an eye problem where his eye lid is inverted, it has caused him an ulcer in his eye. The vet advised he needs immediate eye surgery called "Blepharoplasty". Has anyone had a this problem in their dog before? If so what was the outcome? Did your dog loose his eye sight? How much did you pay for the procedure? Thank You.
Asked by happysmiles - Fri Feb 13 00:23:49 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your dog's condition is called entropion, and can only be corrected through surgery. The inverted eyelid causes the lashes to rub against the cornea and results in the ulcers you describe. Without surgery, the dog will eventually lose sight in the affected eye(s). In the meantime, its a very painful condition. This is a fairly common disorder in many breeds, especially the bulldog, and is easily corrected through surgery. I'd recommend seeing a veterinary ophthalmologist for the procedure as they are likely to have had far more experience in correcting this problem that your regular vet.

Glands, lumps, ulcers, irritable tongue?
Q. I spent last weekend sleeping because the glands in my neck had swollen, stiff/painful and I felt exhausted. Since then, I have developed two painful lumps one under each armpit (can't touch them). My tongue is swollen, 7/8 ulcers have appeared around the edge, the surface is painful (burning sensation). My ears are irritable and today two puffy water 'bags' appeared on my face (below my right eye). It is difficult/painful to eat/drink. My doctor suggested it is 'stress' related and told me to visit him again in two/three weeks if symptoms haven't disappeared... He didn't prescribe anything. I'm 45, a working mum with two lovely little girls... hence, my concern! Last time I visited the doctors was two years ago - only go when we need… [cont.]

A. you should definitely check with a doctor. but, it could be glaucoma and a cataract. glaucoma can be a sign of diabetes, or it can just be glaucoma but a clear cataract either way will bother your eye and keep growing so you have to get it removed. A cataract clearing surgery takes one day and you have to wear those big glasses for about a couple of days, so thats an option that you could possibly try. hope this helps. :]

Asked by Elexus - Mon Nov 2 18:10:00 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends what kind of ulcer you had and what caused it to start with Corneal abrasion from grit etc are different but treated the same way Do you wear contact lenses if so then hygiene is of the utmost importance. Some bacteria that cause corneal ulcers can actually live in contact lense cases even with solution. If you do then change back to glasses As a doctor I advise you to see an opthalmologist (eye doctor) and have a proper examination. Most eye clinics have a rapid access service or drop in sessions. Alternatively there a numerous eye hospitals everywhere - like A&E but for eyes. Continue with your ointment but best to get checked out as you only get one pair of eyes so treat them right

A. Gosh do I know how you feel. One week ago we had to euthanize our fifteen-year-old Cocker Spaniel. On Thursday morning he seemed fine. By Thursday night he was lethargic and obviously not himself. Friday morning we took him to the vet and they discovered a tumor on his pancreas, probably growing into his liver. As much as I loved him, I would never let him suffer. It hurts us so badly, but it is cruel to make them live in pain when they don't have to. We really do have to consider their quality of life, it isn't ours. Nobody can make a decision like this for you, we can just advise you. I hope the best for you and your little dog. God Bless

A. It is ok to be nervous, but these operations are pretty safe. Since you dog needs the eye fixed now, it is a good time to neuter him too so he doenst have to have the anesthesia once, which I personally hate waking up from worse than I do being operated on. I am glad you care so much aobut your dog. So many aren't so lucky. Just try to think calming thoughts. It will be OK.

A. yes you should. I have had cats all of my life, regularly totally 6 or more and they love nothing more than running around in the area outside that they call home. Cats can adapt to living indoors, but so can any animal, if you want it to enjoy living then allow it to roam around outside. One of my cats is so fond of being outside that it is rare for us to see it indoors before 10 or 11 at night. Also the younger stray will feel happier having a playmate, especially an older cat as they bond in a 'pride' like friendship and will groom and play with each other a lot more if they can go around together all the time. My advice is to keep your cat well fed, watered and with easy access to indoors but other than that allow it all of the outdoor… [cont.]

This is on Clostridium difficile...thought I'd isolate it out of the maze... C. Difficile lives in the horse's gut, but can begin increasing populations and killing off the good bacteria, especially after a round of antibiotics. It may be something the vet should look at. Here is a very good one on the overall causes...covers Salmonella and Pototmac, and others... Resolving it will be determined by finding the cause and eliminating it, if possible. Managing his diet will be an important factor in his recovery as well. I think after you read the articles you'll have at least some… [cont.]
