Proper nounSingular United States Marine Corps Plural - United States Marine Corps
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States armed forces responsible for providing force projection from the sea, using the mobility of the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. It is one of seven uniformed services of the United States. In the civilian leadership structure of the United States military, the Marine Corps is a component of the Department of the Navy, often working closely with U.S. naval forces for training, transportation and logistic purposes; however, in the military leadership structure the Marine Corps is a separate branch. Captain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of Continental Marines on 10 November 1775 in Philadelphia as naval infantry. Since then, the mission of Marine Corps has evolved with changing military doctrine and American foreign policy. The Marine Corps served in every American armed conflict and attained prominence in the 20th century when its theories and practices of amphibious warfare proved prescient and ultimately formed the cornerstone of the Pacific campaign of World War II. By the mid-20th century, the Marine Corps had become the dominant theorist and practitioner of amphibious warfare. Its ability to respond rapidly to regional crises gives it a strong role in the implementation and execution of American foreign policy. The United States Marine Corps includes just over 203,000 (as of October 2009) active duty Marines and just under 40,000 reserve Marines. It is the smallest of the United States' armed forces in the Department of Defense (the United States Coast Guard is smaller, about one-fifth the size of the Marine Corps, but is under the Department of Homeland Security). The Marine Corps is nonetheless larger than the entire armed forces of many significant military powers; for example, it is larger than the active duty Israel Defense Forces or the whole of the British Army. The Marine Corps accounts for around six percent of the Military budget of the United States. The cost per Marine is $20,000 less than the cost of a serviceman from the other services, and the entire force can be used for both hybrid and major combat operations, that is, the Marines cover the entire Three Block War. GNU Free Documentation License Can someone tell me what it is like being an officer in the United States Marine Corps? Q. Hey. I am trying to decide between a future career as an officer in the Air Force or as an officer in the Marine Corps. Can someone please tell me what it is like being an office in the Marine Corps? I would like the pros and cons, the stuff you'll be doing, what it is like and all that stuff. Asked by Kyle M - Mon Nov 24 20:52:23 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I suggest that you thoroughly search Yahoo Answers because the questions of Marine officer lifestyle and responsibilities have already been addressed and there is some pretty good information available. It is hard to generalize because work environments and schedules may vary a great deal even within one service, depending on your specific MOS. For example, in the Marines, Air Wingers will only rarely be found "in the field" living in tents, but this can be common on the "ground side." One thing that is standard is normal career progression for a Marine officer consists of a series of tours generally three years each in length and alternating between deploying and non-deploying units. When attached to a deploying unit the normal… [cont.] Answered by NARCD - Tue Dec 2 16:21:58 2008 Is it POSSIBLE to become an officer in the United States Marine Corps without a college degree? Q. I'm not asking if it is probable, just wondering if it is at all possible within the regulations. Asked by David L - Mon Mar 3 02:21:34 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Possibly Warrant Officer, which requires a minimum paygrade of E7 before you can apply..and you won't get promoted past W-3 without a degree anyway. But regular Officer: nope. 4 year degree minimum. Answered by Mrsjvb - Mon Mar 3 08:09:38 2008 I am going to join the United States Marine Corps. Do you know any web resources I can look at to prepare?
Q. Like what to prepare for when it comes to boot camp, what boot camp is like, what to expect, what to do, what not to do, etc. I think researching all of this will give me a better edge to complete the tasks that await me. The simpler the information, the better. I don't want be knee-deep in research on all the important battles and histories of the Marines. There will be a time and place for that later.
