Proper nounSingular United States Marine Corps Plural - United States Marine Corps
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States armed forces responsible for providing force projection from the sea, using the mobility of the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. It is one of seven uniformed services of the United States. In the civilian leadership structure of the United States military, the Marine Corps is a component of the United States Department of the Navy, often working closely with U.S. naval forces for training, transportation and logistic purposes; however, in the military leadership structure the Marine Corps is a separate branch. Captain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of Continental Marines on 10 November 1775 in Philadelphia as naval infantry. Since then, the mission of the Marine Corps has evolved with changing military doctrine and American foreign policy. The Marine Corps has served in every American armed conflict and attained prominence in the 20th century when its theories and practices of amphibious warfare proved prescient and ultimately formed the cornerstone of the Pacific campaign of World War II. By the mid-20th century, the Marine Corps had become the dominant theorist and practitioner of amphibious warfare. Its ability to respond rapidly to regional crises gives it a strong role in the implementation and execution of American foreign policy. The United States Marine Corps includes just over 203,000 (as of October 2009) active duty Marines and just under 40,000 reserve Marines. It is the smallest of the United States' armed forces in the Department of Defense (the United States Coast Guard is smaller, about one-fifth the size of the Marine Corps, but is normally under the Department of Homeland Security). The Marine Corps is nonetheless larger than the entire armed forces of many significant military powers; for example, it is larger than the active duty Israel Defense Forces or the whole of the British Army. The Marine Corps accounts for around six percent of the Military budget of the United States. The cost per Marine is $20,000 less than the cost of a serviceman from the other services, and the entire force can be used for both hybrid and major combat operations, that is, the Marines cover the entire Three Block War. GNU Free Documentation License What are the physical requirements for United States Marine Corps officer candidates? Q. Does anyone know specific physical requirements for officer candidates in the USMC? Basic ones must be running, push-ups, sit-ups but how about pull-ups and height/weight? Asked by Midnight Fox - Wed Oct 1 01:00:09 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. "20 Pull ups 100 crunches 18 minute 3 mile run And that is minimums. You Best shoot for doing better than that." Wrong! Those are to max out the PFT. Min, for males, is 10 pull-ups (really it's like 7 or 8 but my OSO won't send anyone with less than 10), 80 sit-ups, 24 minute 3-mile (Min cumulative score is 225 out of 300). The guy above did have it right that you should always shoot for the highest but that goes well beyond mere PFT scores. New OCS classes will also have to do the CFT and the scoring for that is still being developed, your OSO should have more information. The height and weight chart (min and max) is available elsewhere online. If you have any more questions, talk to an OSO or e-mail me and I'll send what I know. -Semp [cont.] Answered by Yuriy - Wed Oct 1 01:26:22 2008 What are the Benefits of being a United States Marine Corps officer? Q. Overrated, as in gets more attention and/or hype than it deserves. Please provide some arguments either way. Asked by Leonardo D - Mon Feb 22 03:21:28 2010 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. Personally, I think they are under rated. You have to be in combat with the Marines to have an understanding, Every time the Marines have gone in combat under a U.S. Army commander, they have received accolades from the Army. Pershing, in WWI, said the deadliest weapon in the world was a marine and his rifle. A marine named Krulak saw the possibilitaies of amphibious landings in WWII which allowed the Army to conduct the D-Day landings after the Marines had perfected amphibious landings. In Korea, MacArthur said if he had another division like the first Marine Division, he could win the war. A U.S. Army General (Lowe) said the safest place to be in Korea was behind a company of Marines, commenting, "Lord, how they could fight!"
