How to calculate the caliber of a bullet?
Q. How to calculate the caliber of a bullet? Such as if the bullet weighed 750g and was 4 inches long ( including ogive) 3 inches in length (point to point) and 0.5 inches in diameter at widest point. What would the caliber of this bullet be and what's the formula.
Asked by Hamza - Sat May 3 10:44:40 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Caliber of a bullet is typically the diameter of the bullet in hundreths on an inch. In your case, that would be 50 caliber (50/100 inch). 38 caliber is 0.38 inches, 44 caliber is 0.44 in, and so on. There are exceptions. 357 caliber is not 357/100 inch, but 357/1000 inch, or .357 in. 308 caliber is 0.308 in.

What caliber is best for the Springfield Armory XD pistols?
Q. Okay, after reading many of your great answers, and after giving it much thought, I decided the gun I want is a Springfield XD. Now, I am having trouble picking out a caliber, and was hoping you could help. I want a hard hitting caliber that penetrates and expands better than the other calibers. This gun will be used for my nightstand, and in a concealed holster when away from home. Should I choose the XD-357, the XD-40, or the XD-45?
Asked by zzz - Sun May 17 10:28:23 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. John hit it on the nose. I would pick 9mm above all the others. With good HP's, they will expand just as well as .40 SW and .45ACP. 9mm allows for faster follow up shots as well. No pistol round has a 100% chance of a one shot stop, so id rather have a round that can put 2 or 3 down range in a hurry. Shot placement counts for more than the size of the bullet. as for .357 sig...i would avoid that one like the plague. Ive heard that when shot through clothes it can fail to expand, and will over penetrate. It is also much more expensive and harder to find. A 9mm +P can do nearly anything .357 can do. If you buy into the bigger is better, then by all means get a .45, a .45 wont let you down. But i find 9mm to be just as good, if not all… [cont.]

What do you consider to be the absolute minimum caliber for boar?
Q. Hypothetically speaking, assume your local hunting regulations say you can use anything you want for boar hunting, no caliber restrictions. This includes rimfire if you really wanted to use it. What do you consider to be the absolute minimum caliber you can humanely kill a boar with. Just a side note here, I have absolutely no intentions of ever hunting boar with a rimfire, I just threw that in there for clarification of no caliber restrictions.

A. Here's the deal Butch. In days gone by, I grew up hunting Louisiana bottom lands that almost never ended back in those days. The woods were full of squirrels, deer and hogs.I can't count how many deer and hogs were killed by my .22 Magnum lever action While squirrel hunting. A deer shot in the neck with a .22 Magnum hollow point went down as quick as a 30/06 could put them down. And a 300 lb hog shot at close range in the burr of the ear with the gun would not make another single step. But it would be almost impossible to kill that same boar with a shoulder shot from the 22. Mag. Or even recover a large deer if it were a shoulder shot. I was a grown man before I ever figured out anyone ever needed anything bigger. So my vote for the minimum… [cont.]

What is the best caliber for white tail on the market?
Q. I want an acurate caliber for a white tail. I want it to be big enough to kill it 1st or 2nd shot. I will make shots anywhere from 50-400 yds so i would need a pretty powerfull and long range round. I will also shoot through rough forest and open field. I will be using a scope.
Asked by TJHell - Tue Dec 5 18:03:20 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Simple truth is, there is no best calibur, just whats best for you. Pick whatever your comfortable with in the high power range (or shotgun ga for slugs) and go with it. Since you say that you'll be in rough forest, you may want to consider a shorter barrel length. Any good high power will do the job in the range you've indicated. A good shotgun will do just fine in close ranges (mine is very accurate to 150 yrds). Once you pick the calibur you want, you still have to decide whether or not you'll use a scope. With the longer range shots, I'd advise one.

Asked by Adam - Tue Jul 28 22:47:58 2009 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Springfield XD-357. 357 Sig is a very hot round. Using a 125 grain Jacketed Hollowpoint at nearly 1500 FPS, it mimics the 357 magnum which is the most effective caliber for self defense. You get 12 rounds in each magazine. That is a lot of firepower!!! The Springfield XD has a heavy recoil spring, so shooting the 357 sig is very easy and fun. The 357 sig is as easy to find as 45 acp, and costs less money (at least it does where I live). It also provides much more energy than the 45 acp, while expanding much better. Many agencies are dropping their current calibers in favor of the 357 sig. For best results, use 125 grain Speer Gold Dot JHP's. Doubletap Ammo offers some of the hottest loads.

A. Look at Marlin. They make the best lever actions around, in a variety of calibers. The new .308 Marlin is made for a lever action, and is big enough for black bear. I like the .45-70 - it's big enough for any bear walking. And the old, reliable .30-30 is a great choice, too.

A. This is an easy one---you want .22LR (.22 Long Rifle). 500 bullets cost $15 and the recoil is practically zero. If you wanna do alot of shooting without spending alot of money go with a .22LR.

A. Beyond just watching the flag, if you wait long enough (after the helicopter gets in your line of fire and then leaves) the guy you are with will say "It's now or never." Take the shot then, the wind will have stopped.

A. Besides the .50 bmg, the heavy weight. The Weatherby .30-378, 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum, and 7mm Remington Magnum (Hunting/Big Game) rifles are next, with both distance and power to spare. Or you could go with the light weight popular .308 military/ police sniper rifle designed to kill soldiers and criminals. ( The .338 Lapua is in there too!).

What gun maker made a bolt action in 35 caliber?
Q. I'm not talking about the 35 whelen. I mean the 35 caliber deer rifle cartridge like in the marlin 336 c lever action in 35. I once saw one in bolt action but cant find it.
Asked by Lavish G - Sun Apr 27 09:36:16 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The 35 Whelen IS a 35 caliber chambering. I suspect however the exact chambering you are looking for is "35 remington" which was fairly common in the marlin 336 It was designed to be used in a semiauto rifle that remington at one time produced, and was also found in many pump action rifles and level actions. It was chambered in the old Model 31 bolt action, and Winchester made a few in their model 70, now no one is making it in any bolt action rifle. I have to ask, why would you want a boltgun in 35 remmy rather than a lever action in 35 remmy? If you desire a bolt gun, why are you choosing 35 remmy rather than 35 whelen or some other chambering? To me it is like you are looking for a bolt action 30-30

How big does your hands need to be to hold and fire a desert eagle .50 caliber pistol?
Q. I am about 5'6. From my wrist to the tip of pointer finger measures about 7 inches and from the tip of my thumb to the outward edge of my hand measures about 6 inches. Are my hands big enough to hold and fire a .50 caliber desert eagle comfortably?

A. I have small hands. My moms are even tinier. We both found no problem firing the D.Eagle because of it. But yes, you WILL notice it's unusual size... All hand sizes will. Edit: And forget Colter, he doesn't know what he's talking about. The 1# thing you'll actually be using your gun for is poking holes in paper and having fun! While impractical, the Desert Eagle is one of the funnest guns I've ever fired.

Asked by Michael is ninga - Tue Jul 29 04:37:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. On the M2 .50 cal, the bolt carrier group is 'floating', allowing it to slide back and be absorbed by the two buffer springs. Plus, when you switch barrels, you screw them on all they way, then screw it back the opposite and hear the 3 clicks. That ensures your barrel and your bolt are in measurable distance. If not, you'll have a dislodged bullet or worse. You have to change them after a certain number of cycling fire so your barrel don't warp. The M82 Barrett, the whole barrel and bolt carrier floats. This eliminates the hard recoil, allowing you to keep your sights on target. The awesome design fully absorbs the kinetic energy. It is the first and only in design that has the floating barrel. Plus the gas ports help a lot. Too… [cont.]

A. According to the article Dylan attatched they're the most fun to go after with a combat handgun like a sig, glock, h&k, baretta, w/e. That's the route I'd go. I know you want to use a revolver I just got alittle hyped thinking about hunting with my carry. S&W 686 (.357 mag) with a 6 inch barrel comes to mind If they said 9mm will do it I am sure a .357 mag is plenty. Maybe a thompson encore or contender they aren't revolvers but really nice hunting pistols.

Asked by mysmiden321 - Fri Mar 10 08:26:45 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only safe way do do it is to make a chamber cast and measure the results. There's a product called Cerrosafe, which is a low-melting metal, that you can melt in a double boiler (melts at about 180F) and pour into the chamber. As it cools it will shrink, at which point you can tap it out. Once it gets to room temperature, though, it will regain its original dimensions. Once it's completely cooled, grab a caliper or micrometer and start measuring. The problem is that just because you know the caliber, you don't necessarily know what cartridge it takes. .38 special, .357, 9x19, 9x21, 9x23 and a few other calibers all use the same diameter bullet. Better to be safe than sorry by getting accurate information. See the link below and search… [cont.]
