How long can you be 3cm dialated and have lost your mucus plug before going into labor?
Q. I lost my mucus plug about about 4 days ago and have been 3 cm dialated for about 2 days now. Ive been having contractions some seem to be regular and then they subside. Does anyone know how long it will be before labor starts?

A. You can lose and reform your mucus plug. Generally if you lose your plug and labor (real labor with contractions that increase in frequency, length and strength) doesn't start within 3 days your body makes another one. You can walk around at 3 cm dilated for weeks. In fact, many women are pregnant with their 2nd child (or subsequent children) are dilated several centimeters for the last few weeks of their pregnancy. Prelabor can go on for days. In prelabor you'll have contractions that are painful/intense and may even occur in a pattern but they don't get longer, stronger and more frequent. They often start up and stay for a while and then peter out. It's your body's way of gearing up and your uterus is getting coordinated. The best… [cont.]

How many cms dialated do you have to be before the doctor will induce you?
Q. I am 35 weeks pregnant and was found to be 1/2cm dialated on Friday. I don't really want to be induced, but at what point will the doctor decide to induce labor. What is true about being induced? I just had a friend scheduled to be induced at 39 weeks since she was at 2cm for about 3-4 weeks. Yet, when I ask about being induced, most people say that doctors don't induce until after 42 weeks have passed. Does it depend on the doctor?
Asked by Kate - Mon Jul 20 13:07:33 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most of the time you won't be induced in less you are over due, or the baby is under stress, and even if most of the time if the baby or mother is under some kind of stress they will do a csection and not even induce you. You are at least 5 weeks away from being induced if that were to happen.

What could the reason be for my right eye being dialated this morning?
Q. I had the wierdest thing happen...I had no pereferial vision in that eye while it was acting wierd. I had my friend look at it and she said it was super dialated. SOmetimes when I get a migrain I get that wierd vision, but my head was fine. I am a teacher and had to choice but to continue with my day!

A. NO NO NO! I just saw this post, and realize it was from a day ago, but I just had to write you. A loss of peripheral vision in one eye is always serious, as is having one eye dilated. Unless you used some type of drop ofr nose spray, (pseudophedrine can cause the eye to dilate) you absolutely need to see an eye m.d!

How can you tell if your dialated?
Q. I'm 32wks pregnant and my cervix feels soft and kinda open, I can fit the tip of my finger practically. Well I called my OB but she's doing a delivery so that's why I'm here asking moms with experience or someone with any experience on this. I just want to know if this is considered being dialated, I didn't go through this with my first daughter, so it's like new to me. About 3 days ago I had a contraction which seemed weird to me at 32wks so I figured I'd check my cervix, to see if I was dialated, but the thing is I don't know what it should feel like, cause my 1st pregnancy went by so quick and easy. I have had like 2 contractions in the last 2 days. Last doctors visit baby was positioned already, she asked me to monitor her movements. I… [cont.]

A. I am a doctor, but not an obstetrician. It is common for the cervix to be a little soft and fit part of the finger during pregnancy. The cervix usually dialates to 10cm during the initial stages of labour. If you are worried about it, the only way to ease your concerns would be to get your midwife to finger you. If you are not bleeding and have no abdominal contractions, then i would not be too concerned, and the examination can wait several days.

How dialated do you have to be for the hospital to keep you?
Q. Last week I was dialated to 3, I've still been having contractions, so I"m probly still dialating... How many cm do you have to be for them to keep you? MY contractions have been at 3.5 min. apart for over 3 hours. They're not getting any closer, and they're not too intense, but they are getting more intense... idk what to do. I called L&D and they told me not to come in til I can't walk or talk... but that sounds wierd to me.

What can happen if you push before you are fully dialated in labor?
Q. I'm worried that this may have happened to me and caused some damage. Since I couldn't stop pushing when I was in labor with my last one, and they never got to check me before I delivered. They checked me right before 8:00 and I was a 4, then I delivered at 8:18. The baby flipped into position, then I had the urge to push and couldn't stop. Can someone transition that fast? Is it possible to deliver without being fully dialated? Or to force your cervix open and damage it? They always say don't push before you are fully dialated, but they don't say what happens if you do. Does anyone know?

A. Pushing too soon can cause your cervix to swell, Actually making labor longer.

How long can you be dialated before having the baby?
Q. I went to the Emergency Room November 1st and they told me that I was 30% effaced and 1 cm dialated. I havent started getting internal exams yet. I start those this week. A. You can be dilated at 1-cm for weeks before active labor begins. I didn't dilate until a few days before I went into labor but I've known many women who were dilated 1 to 2-cm for a few weeks before going into labor. Also, 30% effacement is good but you've still got a bit to go. Good luck to you!

How long will my eyes stay dialated?
Q. I had an eye exam by an optomotrist that dialated my eyes to look in them. How long will they stay dialated? Things are blurry and bright. It's buggin me. How long til this wears off?
Asked by vilma - Thu Feb 26 17:59:35 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That depends upon what drop the doctor used to dilate your eyes. Here are some different drops that can be used to dilate eyes. 1) Phenylephrine (shortest acting but not a very good dilator) 2) Mydriacyl (gives rapid dilation and shortest acting of the really good dilators. 3-5 hours and then they start to resolve) 3) Cyclopentolate (rapid dilation that causes deep cycloplegia--blurriness. Lasts longer than mydriacyl) 4) Homatropine (rapid dilation that can last for a couple of days) 5) Atropine (this is the big boy. Rapid dilation and can last for days and days) Chances are pretty good your doctor used mydriacyl.

How big should the baby be by 36 weeks? Has anyone been dialated at 36 weeks?

A. It varies how big a baby will measure at 36 weeks. On average your baby will be about 5 1/2 pounds. However, rate of growth is individual for babies during pregnancy just like after they are born. All babies don't weigh the same at birth nor do all 3 month old babies weigh the same. In the same way, all babies at 36 weeks gestation are not going to weigh the same. I have given birth 4 times. With my second baby, I was beginning to efface and dilate 3 weeks before his due date. Despite that, though, he wasn't born until 11 days past his due date. I was effacing and dilating 6 weeks before my due date with my 3rd baby and she wasn't born until 5 days after her due date. When you begin to efface and dilate has no real bearing on how soon you'l [cont.]

Q. At 35 weeks my ob told me she will start checking my cervix. If I am dialated and effaced, does that mean I will go into labor soon?

A. Cervical checks don't really mean much. You can walk around dilated to 3cm for weeks, or you can stay closed up to a few hours before your baby is born. Cervical checks just aren't a very reliable measurement. They're not an accurate indicator of when labor will start, and they're not really that reliable during labor, either. Many OBs and midwives don't even check the cervix at all. If you don't want them, you can tell your doctor you don't want to be checked. They can lead to false hope that labor is going to start soon when it may not, or they can disappoint you if you're not dilated, when labor could be right around the corner.

A. yes, go! they dont have to be painful to be getting the job done. after 4-5 centimeters things go FAST so you should be having a baby anytime now. and doc told me 3-4-5 rule. you should have contractions for 3 hours that last for 40 seconds every 5 minutes so that sounds like labor to me. and dont worry...hospitals are sooo use to sending people how. they arent gonna think you're crazy. at least they will know you are 4 cm and making progress as opposed to someone who isnt dialated at all and is just paranoid. GOODLUCK!!

Is it safe to have sex even to I am dialated and lost my bloody show?
Q. My husband and I have not had sex in over a month. Last saturday I was in the hospital at 33 weeks and the Ob told me that I was one centimeter dialated and that I had lost my "Bloody show". Is it not safe to have sex period or only if I use a condom. Right now, neither my husband or I are in the mood...But I am only 33 weeks pregnant and may feel like it eventually.

A. Hi :) I would of course contact your OB to confirm before you do have sex however: If you have not been contracting and have not had vaginal bleeding and your membranes are still in tact then it should be safe. If your OB does say its ok, I know that sex is probably the LAST thing in the world you feel like doing BUT it can be really beneficial for when it comes time to have bubs. Semen has prostaglandins in it, this is the same stuff that they use in the gels when they induce women, just a higher concentration. This means that when you do go into labour your cervix will already be nice and soft which can be helpful :) Goodluck xx

i am 40 weeks pregnant and only dialated 1 1/2 cm, what are the possibilites of me having a csection?
Q. I am only dialated to 1 1/2 cm because my doctor stretched my cervix 3 days ago. he said that i may have to have a c section but i am scared. How bad is a c section compared to a vaginal birth?
Asked by baby girl on the way - Thu Oct 9 18:09:08 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. how far you are dilated has absolutely nothing to do with the need for c section. You might be induced, but that's about it unless other complications come up. So if you need a c section either there is some other reason you need one or your dr just uses any excuse to do them and that is not good!

Can pupils become dialated from a lack of sleep?
Q. I have read that they get dialated from drugs, lack of light, being in love/attracted to someone, and nervous system arousal (adrenaline). My girls pupils are VERY dialated when around me even in a VERY well lit room. She does not do drugs so I am reading it as a sign of love/attraction. But she claims that it is because she doesn't get much sleep. For example, her pupils were VERY dialated on our first date and she claimed it was because she hadn't slept for a couple days. Once again she does NOT do drugs. No she doesn't do drugs believe me... I read in an article that peoples pupils only become dialated like this even in a well lit room when in love. She sleeps everyday, she just hadn't slept for a couple days before our first date (I… [cont.]

A. Sleep deprivation causes excessive daytime sleepiness, inability to concentrate, low energy and irritability...I have never heard of dilation of the pupils as a side effect of sleepiness.

Have any of you gone from 0 centimeters dialated, to labor within a day or two?
Q. I'm still not dialated, but I was wondering how likely it is that I could still go into labor relatively soon. How long were any of you dialated before going into labor, and were any of you completely un-dialated and still gone into labor soon?

A. With my first my water broke, I went to the hospital at "not even a 1" and delivered within 17 hours. With my second I thought my water broke, it was really a leak, anyway I was "not even a 1" again and delivered within 4 hours. So yes, it is possible!

How many cm dialated do you have to be before the doctors keep you in the hospital?
Q. Last monday I was 2cm and my mucus plug came out yesterday, not many contractions, but I feel a lot of pressure.

A. depends on how quickly you are dilating and how strong your contractions are. I walked around for 8 weeks constantly contracting at 5 minute intervals and 6 weeks at 2 cm and they told me they wouldn't keep me until 4 cm (but I ended up with a c-section so never got to that point). Congratulations and Good Luck!

My dog had a dialated pupil and a small pupil unresponsive to light?
Q. Last night I looked at my puppy and one eyes was really dilated almost no color in that eye the other one was extremely small and unresponsive to light. After a few hours it went back to normal but should I be worried that this may be something serious?
