Why do cats' pupils dilate when they are about to pounce?
Q. Why do the pupils of cats dilate so massively when they are about to attack or pounce? Even when the object or the cat does not move, the light does not change or anything - the pupils dilate without the environment changing at all - why is this?
Asked by Dallaz - Tue Jan 26 07:08:44 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A cat's mood is indicated by the position of the eyelids and the dilation of the pupil. Any strong emotional arousal - fear, anger, pleasure, excitement - can result in the sudden contraction of the cat's pupils. Cats open their eyes wide when they are alert. By leaving his eyes ope and unprotected, a wide-eyed cat that bumps your face with his cheeks is showing his trust. But a direct unblinking stare from a distance is a sign of dominance and aggression, as are slit-eyed looks.

Why do our pupils dilate during fight or flight reaction?
Q. During the "Fight-or-flight" reaction, why do our pupils dilate and why do our muslces tense up?
Asked by Butter Cup - Fri May 9 13:04:09 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The flight or fight response causes a lot of changes in the body. One of the most noticable effects is the flood of adrenaline into the blodstream. This causes a rise in blood pressure (constriction of blood vessels), increased heart rate, increased respiration and what not all designed to give your body the best chance it can get to respond to whatever danger is perceived. Pupils dilate to let in more light for better vision and your muscles tense up (both from the adrenaline itself and the increased bloodflow and pressure) to allow for faster and stronger responses.

Having eye drops to dilate my pupils. How bad will my sight be for the rest of the day?
Q. I got a routine eye appointment at the eye clinic at the hospital later this week. It's not a sight test I have been told that as part of the process, my eyes will be subjected to receiving eye drops that will dilate my pupils. Because of this, I am being advised that someone must take me home and unable to drive and use machinery for the rest of the day. Can anyone tell me how bad their sight was when they had this and how long did the effects last for?
Asked by jumpycheese - Sun Feb 22 15:28:55 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The effects of the dilating drops are fairly different for everyone. It all depends on the drop, the dose and the strength. For me, my eyes were very blurry seeing things close up and my eyes were very sensitive to the light for a while. Usually the drops wear off by the evening however it all depends. SOME people may be able to drive after this however it's better to come prepared with someone to drive you home for your own safety. I have never been to the eye doctor where they told me i'd be able to drive right away after. Good luck, it's not so bad!

A. Yep. It's mainly with guys. If they see something they like, it arouses them and it makes their pupils dilate. When there's something that upsets them, it's the totally opposite. The pupils get smaller because they aren't aroused. Hope I helped!

Do the pupils dilate relatively more with age or with vision/eyesight problems?
Q. *Noting that the vision/eyesight problem isn't dilation! :p I just seem to notice that the more elderly people I see have more dilated pupils (I am talking when indoors) than the younger people (and with the younger people - some have significantly dilated pupils while others, not so much --> which is what makes me think it may be a vision problem...).

A. May just be an unusual group of people you see. Pupil size declines with age, older people on average have smaller pupils than younger people. Pupil size varies from person to person. It is seldom related to a vision problem.

What makes pupils dilate and contract over and over again in a short period of time?
Q. I looked in the mirror and saw my pupils get big, then small, then big--just going back and forth. It is weird. I am not using any drugs, and the level of light was the same during the minute I was watching them be all crazy. Has anyone ever had this happen to them?
Asked by mizchulita - Tue Jul 3 19:26:08 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It was probably a little bit of an optical illusion. If this is a persistent problem, you will experience periods when everything you see gets brighter and dimmer at brief intervals. If this should happen, I would have it checked out by a doctor, since it could be some kind of seizure.

How do pupils dilate to someone you have interest in, as opposed to shades of light or dark?
Q. They say pupils get smaller in the light, and bigger in the dark, then what's the concept of it getting bigger when you have an interest in someone?
Asked by Champagne - Tue Dec 22 18:59:22 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Almost very much like the auto focus camera, where there is a choice of 'manual-settings' too !!! Left by itself, the eyes test only the light, to decide the aperture size... When "we" decide to let in a person, we take over partially, the 'deciding' factor of how much of that person to be let in us, and the aperture size gracefully 'bows' to our wishes! When it is a new born innocent charming, enchanting, never-tiring-to-look-at face of a baby child, the eyes cooperate beyond the "call of duty", refusing to even blink out of its own physical urgency! Otherwise, forget the aperture, we don't even see "eye-to-eye"!!

The optometrist put eye drops to dilate my pupils & now I can hardly see cuz its so bright, how long will last
Q. I've just been to the optometrist. She did a cataract and retinal exam and put special eye drops to dilate my pupils. After I went out of the dark office, I can hardly see because it's so bright outside (it's a sunny afternoon here). How long will the medicine last? I looked in the mirror and my pupils are still dilated. I especially can't bear to look at bright whites and yellows right now cause it hurts.

A. You shouldn't be on the computer. It should last a few hours, depending on how fast your metabolism is. Go lie down and rest or something, you shouldn't watch TV or stare at lights/screens - it can damage your eyes. Wear sunglasses when going outside but try to avoid going outside at all.

Why do my pupils dilate when playing video games?
Q. I got this new game called Modern Warfare 2 and i usually play online but i find if i monitor my pupils while playing they get increasingly larger and then back to really small when i stop playing, i do have some anxiety issues so could this be bad for me?
Asked by Matt102 - Fri Jan 15 00:27:50 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your pupils are dilating to allow extra light in. All the sudden flashes and bright colors of Modern Warfare 2 are intense, so your eyes naturally adjust. It should be no problem, just be sure to pause and take breaks, blink, and most importantly beat the game :)

Are there any coloured contacts where the "pupils" dilate with your natural pupils?
Q. Hi, I know it sounds like a silly question, but are there any? I mean if price wasnt an issue can you buy contact lenses smart enough to dilate in low lighting situations same as your real pupils rather than the whole in the middle just being constantly the same diameter?

A. Unless they can invent contacts made of living tissue and connect it to your iris so that it knows when the pupil is dilating... Lol..science is light years away from something like that.

what drug causes the pupils to dilate?
Q. A few weeks ago my ex boyfriend came over and he was obviously on something. He laid down on the bed and I noticed that his pupils were friggin huge! Could someone possible tell me what he was on. I talked to someone and they told me that he was popping pills. So what kind of pills would cause a person's eyes to dilate?
Asked by The It Factor! - Wed May 6 21:08:11 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most stimulants dilate the pupils. These include amphetamines, cocaine, methamphetamine, as well as strict hallucinogens such as LSD, psilocybin, etc. Belladonna also dilates the pupils but it is very uncommon in the US (by the way, Mia Bella is completely incorrect - narcotics do NOT dilate pupils). Anything wider than about 6 1/2 mm is considered to probably be due to a drug. On the other hand, a group of chemicals called sympathetic amines (such as epinephrine or adrenaline made in the adrenal gland) also dilate pupils. Adrenaline is released during stress and during sexual arousal/interest.

Why do the drops optometrists put in your eyes make your pupils dilate?
Q. How does it work? Or what's the name of the liquid they use?
Asked by IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZER - Thu Feb 12 21:37:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think phenylephrine is the most common one used, but atropine is also used. They kind of paralyze the muscles in the iris (color part of your eye) so that they won't contract, and your pupil opens up.

Why do your pupils dilate when you lie?
Q. I've Googled it and searched everything I could think of to find the answer. Does anyone know or have a theory?
Asked by Hi - Fri Feb 22 16:09:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Because lying makes you nervous, and your body starts what's called a sympathetic response. The nervous system causes the release of hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline which cause the pupils to dilate and the heart rate and blood pressure to increase. You may have heard of the "flight or fight" reaction... that's the sympathetic nervous system in action. That's how polygraph lie detectors work. They measure things like heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate because they change when someone lies because lying makes them stressed (whether they realize it or not) and they have a predictable physical reaction thanks to the action of the sympathetic nervous system.
