Dilated pupils?
Q. I went to the eye doctor today and he put drops in my eyes to dilate my pupils, I went out to catch the bus but it was gone. So I walked about 25 minutes to the next bus stop with my pupils dilated, I couldn't see anything. I am now thinking that that wasn't a very good thing to do, and now I am afraid I might have done permanent damage to my eyes. Does anyone know if this is dangerous to you eyesight? It was really sunny when I was walking. They didn't give me anything and they didn't tell me anything about avoiding the sun.

A. Normally after they dialate your eyes they give you a pair of cheap sunglasses type things so that your eyes aren't bothered by the sun. I don't know if it can cause any damage just being outside when your eyes are dialated. If you have any discomfort or problems seeing today I would probably go see the eye doctor again.

Asked by Liss - Mon Jun 30 04:04:29 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the dialated pupils is probably from crying, lack of sleep, or possibly medication. When my friend commited suicide there was no signs before she did it. she looked so happy. a few months before she was cutting and her parents told her to stop. i take a lot of meds from bipolar and so my pupils are always dialated from the medication. usually they don't talk about it before they do it.

A. No officer my eyes aren't dilated because i smoked marijuana (though i was on my way to buy some), i was just really scared because i was speeding because my gun (which i don't have a permit for) fell off my lap and got wedged under the brake, then my cruise control jumped to 90 (i really need to get that fixed) and my reaction time isn't very good because I'm so wasted right now, and I'm just a little out of it because i lost my crack pipe this morning so i don't know what I'm gonna do with the kilo in the back (sell it to little kids probably). No I'm kidding i just left from the optometrist (eye doctor).

How to tell if pupils are dilated if you have dark coloured eyes?
Q. From what I've heard, they said that you can tell if someone is lying/excited if their pupils dilate. But if you're studying someone from a distance or if they have dark eyes eg brown or black eyes, how can you tell if the pupils are dilated or not?
Asked by Taylor Ashford - Mon Aug 31 03:13:46 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are too far to see, there is no answer. You have to know the pupils are the hole where light goes through so you can see. There is no such thing as dark pupil -- they have to be clear so light can pass through. In other words, you should be able to see the pupils dilated or not, if you are close enough to see.

Can you hide dilated pupils like this?
Q. A question that just poped into my head. If i get dilated pupils from a drug, can contacts hide the dilation? Like the colored contacts. Or what about normal contacts?

A. You cannot hide dilated pupils. If the pupils are so large that no part of the colored iris is showing, there are not contacts that will hide this fact.

A. I would. I never had a dilated eye exam until my twenties and was wearing the wrong prescription, probably since elementary school. Pupil dilation does have a number of purposes. It allows your doctor to examine the back of your eye and make sure the structures are healthy (ie your optic nerve and retina). It also temporarily paralyzes the muscles that constrict your pupil and allows your doctor to objectively measure your need for glasses (or contacts) with a retinascope. Based on the way the light bounces off the back of your eye, your doctor can determine what prescription will focus rays of light on your retina (the back of your eye that turns light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain) to allow you to best see… [cont.]

Q. There is a problem I would like to find out about something serious I think is going on with me. Would anyone please give me a picture/website showing me what the inside of dilated pupils look like? Like what a person see's when their pupils are dialated? I know what they look like from the outside, but i'm unsure what they might look like from the inside. Thanks

A. Don't know anything about a site. But I'll tell you what I DO know. The black part of your eye contains your lens. Like a camera lens. It's purpose is to allow you to see by letting only the right amount of light into your eyeball so it can reach the nerve in the back of your eye and then the image is transported instantly to your brain and your brain tells you what you see. All in less time than it takes you to blink. When you are in a lot of light, your lens (the black part of your eye) gets small, even pinpoint small if the sunlight, or flashlight or some other beam is shown directly into your eye. This small lens protects your eye from too much light. As darkness grows, whether it is night time, or a darkened room, etc., your… [cont.]

Do dilated pupils affect your nighttime vision through prescription glasses?
Q. When I view the night sky through my glasses, (not using a telescope) stars lose their sharpness. Do I need a stronger prescription for night time viewing for when my eyes are fully dilated? My corrected daytime vision is great, so any advise? Thanks! I know that dilated pupils let more light in. But my understanding of the eyeball is that more focal aberrations are introduced when your eye is dilated. The more lens/cornea, etc... surface area that is used, the stronger the correction factor (?) needs to be increased. So wouldn't you need a different prescription to take these aberrations into account?
Asked by Dan - Fri Sep 7 13:47:17 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Basic answer, Yes. But it's not as simple as that... Several possible effects can take place when the pupils dilate at night. 1) if the glasses are a little (or a lot) out of date, the amount of blur produced by the error is dependent on the size of the pupil. So what may seem adequate glasses in the day-time may reveal their inadequacy at night. 2) The larger pupil may introduce into the optical system portions of the cornea with a different refration or abberation. This is fairly rare and not usually very significant, but it can be most marked, for example with early cataract. 2) Many people, some more than others, actually shift more short-sighted at night "night myopia". It can sometimes be demonstrated with binoculars: set them… [cont.]

Is One Of The Side Effects Of Abilify Dilated Pupils?
Q. Because before i went to sleep last night i had looked at my eyes and my pupils were dilated and yesterday was my first day of taking Abilify.

A. Bit of a puzzle, this. Blurred vision is certainly one of the side-effects reported by patients on Abilify and similar drugs, but dilated pupils are the result of an anticholinergic action, as with atropine. However, Abilify (aripiprazole) does not have an anticholinergic action.

How can you shrink dilated pupils?
Q. I want to start off by saying... I am not, nor have I ever been a drug addict. That aside, a couple months ago people started coming up to me in bars asking me if I was high and when I responded back "no, why?" they would always comment that my pupils were huge. To make matters worse, I got pulled over the other day for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign and the officer was convinced that I was "on something" because he couldn't see the color in my eyes (which are green). He searched my car and took me to the station to give a drug test, which of course came out negative but I was really frustrated. How can I get my pupils to go down to regular size? I don't want to keep being harassed! Please help!

Why is one of my baby's pupils more dilated than the other?
Q. I have a seven month old baby boy who is healthy in every way. He is on the mark or even ahead with his developmental milestones. Once in a while, however, I notice that one of his pupils is more dilated than the other. Last night it was very noticeable. This morning it is fine. Does anyone know anything about this?

A. Get your baby to a Dr. ASAP. There is a condition called TIA (Transchemic Ishemic Attack) that is a pre-stroke. The fact that it is coming and going is a symptom of this. Please have your baby checked out soon.

Why do drugs like ecstasy cause dilated pupils?
Q. Just why do peoples eyes get so dang huge on ecstasy? I notice during light hours and in brightly lit areas they look pretty normal, but as soon as darkness comes out they look like crackheads. I used to think it was due to seeing things differently (since you get the same effect with psychedelics), but from my experience, I've never really seen anything differently on E. Thanks.
Asked by Raleigh P - Sun Sep 6 19:03:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Ecstasy is a stimulants. That is, it stimulates the (sympathetic) nervous system. Basically our fight or flight reaction. You're body reacts in a few ways - accelerated heartbeat, dilation of blood vessels for the muscles (brings more energy to the muscles to be able to run or attack), tunnel vision, accelerated reaction, and pupil dilation (as well as a few others). This happens with most stimulant type drugs. You become more aware of your surroundings, your eyes become more sensitive, and as a result your pupils dilate to adjust to your surroundings. You body is reacting the same way it would if you were to be thrown into a lions den... Although ecstasy is more fun! :) If you have any other questions on X - feel free to hit me up:… [cont.]

How long are pupils dilated for on lsd?
Q. After you take lsd, your pupils go big. How long does it stay like this? 12 hours? Or only a couple until the peak wears off? Thanks!
Asked by faerie - Thu Feb 18 18:10:21 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It will last for about 8-12 hours and not Only will they be dilated but your whole face will just look like your are messed up because lsd is so intense. If you are worried about having to go somewhere that you would have to act sober you eyes will be the least of worries. I would recommend doing it on a day where you can stay out for the night so you do not have to worry about it. Also going home or something like that could cause you to have a bad trip.

Is there a way to shorten the time your pupils stay dilated on ecstasy?
Q. Interested in the biology behind pupil dilation, what makes eyes stay dilated so long and is there a way to shorten the time they stay dilated.
Asked by Vanda - Mon Jan 11 18:05:12 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The pupils are dilated because ecstasy is a stimulant. Stimulants "stimulate" your body, senses included. The pupil dilate and constrict typically in response to light. However, in a situation where you have activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the pupils dilate. The reasoning is that the body is gearing up for a "fight or flight" type response. Dilated pupils allow in more light, which improves your vision. Other things that happen is that your heart rate goes up to pump more blood to your muscles, and blood gets pulled away from kidneys and gut (which is why you rarely get hungry on ecstasy) to further give more blood to the vital organs and muscles. So in terms of making the time shorten...you really can't. It's part of the… [cont.]

why do people get their pupils dilated at the eye doctor?
Q. what are the reasons for doing this? what does it help? how long does it take for your vision to return to normal afterwards?
Asked by susie q - Mon May 7 22:05:57 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are actually three reasons a doctor may dilate your eyes during an examination. First, as you have been told by others, is to allow a more thorough inspection of the health of the internal structures of the eyes. Second, if the drop used is a parasympatholytic drop, (blocks the parasympathetic nerve impulses to the eye from the brain) then dilation also causes cycloplegia (the cycloplegic effect is what causes the patient's vision to be blurry). Cycloplegia prevents the patient from focusing their eyes during the examination. This can be very helpful in assessing a patient's prescription if he or she is quite far sighted, experiencing focusing spasm, or is too young or too mentally challenged to respond to subjective questions… [cont.]
