Help Treating Eye Ulcers In Cats?
Q. My cat, who is 10 years old, has had 4 Eye Ulcers since January. One required surgery and the other three responded to anti-biotic's. The Vet says that the ulcers are caused by a Virus and that there is no cure. Does anybody know if there something I can give him that might slow the virus down or give him some protection against the virus.

A. Antiviral eye drops are usually effective at treating Herpes eye ulcers but they are expensive and have to be given very frequently when the ulcers flare up. An amino acid called Lysine, available at health food and nutrition stores, can be added to the food and seems to help cats fight the ulcers better. There are several eye medications that can be used and some cats respond better to one than another. Your veterinarian will need to work carefully with you to find the best treatment for your cat. Some cats require lifetime therapy and others only need treatment for stresses like dental cleanings, moving and new additions to the household. Medication is usually tried first, but occasionally referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist is… [cont.]

How long can an eye ulcer last?
Q. My 19yr old Fjord X TB, has had an eye ulcer on his cornea for 6 weeks now,at best he opens it 3/4,it constantly weeps (clear)luckily its winter so no flies,he has a UV mask when needed, antibiotic cream daily and a sachet of bute as it must be so painful. My vet has seen him and said it could take a few weeks(3wks ago) to heal. Has anyone else had experience of horses with ulcers?

A. I have a 25 year old QH that's had eye problems for years, including ulcers, uveitis, cancer, and so on. It's time to get that vet out again. Eye ulcers can get to the point where the cornea actually melts. I'd want it checked again to see if it's healing or needs a more aggressive treatment. Keeping it closed like that is a sure sign of pain. If he's getting bute and still has this much pain... that's not good. Some horses do heal much faster than others. My QH has had eye surgery twice; both times it's taken 2-3 times longer to heal than the surgeons expected. It's possible he's just taking longer, but I'd certainly want the vet to check on it. Good Luck!

What is the best treatment for an eye ulcer on a dog?
Q. My dog has had an eye ulcer for 4 months. It healed and now has come back. He has been blind in this eye since it first appeared.I have been giving him drops, serum, and ointment every 2-4 hours. My vet says I should take him to a specialist for surgery to graft the eye. I am wondering if he will regain his vision if he has the surgery or if I should have the eye removed to stop the pain and discomfort if there is no chance he will see out of this eye again. Any suggestions?

A. The best thing to do would be to talk to the specialist that your vet recommends. He or she may be able to tell you how likely (or unlikely) your dog would be to regain his vision.

How can you tell your dogs eye ulcer is getting better?
Q. I'm going to call the vet today, but to give me peace of mind right now while I'm working, how can you tell if your dogs eye ulcer is getting better? I took her to the eye doctor on monday and they gave her two drops and some oral medication. I started it monday at lunch time and have been doing it since. She is more playful than she was when I first got her (on Saturday), she is eating better as well. She doesn't seem to be holding it shut as much as she was. Just when I go to put drops in it or when the light is really bright in her face. I think it may be looking somewhat better, but I can't really tell. How long does it take these things to heal and what should I look for if it is getting better. Today is the second full day shes been… [cont.]

A. The only way to tell for sure is to stain the eye with a special stain. The ulcer picks up the stain and lets the vet see where the edges of it begin and end, then they rinse it out.

My pug has an eye ulcer and needs surgery?
Q. Does any one know if there are any type of programs that will sponsor my pug to have a $2,200.00 eye surgery for an ulcer?
Asked by romadi - Tue Oct 2 13:49:47 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Have you considered simply having the eye removed? It is called enucleation. It is cheaper than what you are considering, and will solve any future problems that might require surgery. Often, after surgeries are done to remove the ulcer and place the lens plus recovery, the dog looses sight. Doing enucleation completely solves the problem and only runs about six hundred dollars. Just because I have seen so many return visits by people having the ulcers treated, I would choose the other. The success rate in treating ulcers, especially descemetocole, is not high.

Q. My dog has an eye ulcer. What should happen as it is healing? He has antibiotic drops. Thank you

A. Without stain and proper lighting ulcers are very difficult to see You will have to take the dog back to the vet for them to check to see if the ulcer is getting any smaller One of my boxers had a terrible eye ulcer which took 1 1/2 months to clear up...boxers are prone to slow healing of the eye. We finally used Tobramycin and plasma drops to get it to finally heal

A. It's not necessarily an infection because it can be caused by any number of things. "Corneal ulcer" is a very broad term. It also can look like anything from redness and swelling around the eye to a blister on the actual eyeball. It's most common in breed that have protruding eyes such as boxers, boston terriers, etc. It's relatively easy to treat and usually not serious if treated quickly and properly. Good Luck! What causes eye ulcers?
Q. My friend has had them b4 when she was under great stress. The doctor told her she could lose her eye sight. He said she needed rest but said they were caused by damage to her eyes such as a laceration. Symptoms are "like a bad toothache" , extremely light sensitve, and blurry vision. Does anyone have any other insight into this matter. She is getting the symptoms again.
Asked by Phoebe - Mon Sep 8 01:08:08 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Stress may become a factor, as when the body is stressed the immune system doesnt work as well, and can lead to more infections. The other reason is that if the ulcer is due to a virus, stress can actually trigger the recurrence of the virus and therefore the ulcer. As already stated, as soon as she feel the symptoms she should go straight back to optometrist/ophthalmologi st, as the sooner it is treated, the lesses chance of serious complications. Good luck

A. Absolutely. If an ulcer blocks the visual axis - where you look through - and leaves a scar it can certainly mess up your vision. Ulcers can get bad enough that it necessitates a corneal transplant. Think the fusarium fungal infection going around in contact lens wearers a few months back.

is tricin the best to use for ulcer in eye of red heeler?
Q. My 20 month old red heeler has just been diagnosed with an ulcer in her left eye. Her eye is quite cloudy, and at times is quite swollen. i wasnt happy with the vet, so i am hoping someone out there can suggest something, anything. it is breaking my heart to see her unhappy.
Asked by tam - Fri Dec 21 18:42:02 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I haven't heard of tricin, but you should be putting drops in at least 3 times a day or more if your vet recommended it. If you don't feel your vet is giving her proper treatment you should try another. The fact is that eye ulcer's are very painful, perhaps he would prescribe some pain relief for her if you let him know how uncomfortable she was.

Allergic reaction to clear care eye solution maybe linked to corneal ulcers I have?
Q. A little over a year ago I had an allergic reaction to Clear Care Eye Solution. My eyes hurt, they were red, they would water very badly, long after I had taken my contacts out. This would happen every time I put them in. Then, the time this first began is unknown, but about 8-9 months ago, I discovered I had corneal ulcers. I know that I wear contacts and that can be a cause, but I want to know if the allergic reaction to Clear Care could have cause the ulcers. Or if the contacts I was wearing at the time I found out about the ulcers, Bausch and Lomb PureVision Toric for Astigmatism could have cause the reaction. I have finally decided to try and figure out if something besides a scratch getting infected (pretty sure it wasn't that)… [cont.]
Asked by Rebekah - Sat Sep 12 15:57:31 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Clear Care is the least likely system to cause allergic reactions. That is because it is a hydrogen peroxide system, By the time you put your lenses in, the hydrogen peroxide has turned into water and oxygen. Other systems use a more complex disinfectant that you can develop sensitivities to. It is important to replace your case since the catalyst does wear out. If the transformation is not complete, you would definitely have irritation to your eyes.

Did your dog need any surgery, what for? 3. Did your dog loose his eye sight parcially? Fully? Not at all? 4. to determine whether the dog had the Ulcer they did this eye drop and now my dogs eye, left eye, looks sort of blue. Will the discoloration go away? A. I have a 5 yr old chihuahua named Skeeter who has been having the corneal ulcers since she was about 2. They can be caused by scratch to the eye, or in my Skeeter's case, it is what the vet calls spontaneous eye ulcers. She gets them about every 2-3 mo. We have used ointments and eyedrops, and the eyedrops work best for Skeeter. She only gets one kind not 2. We usually catch it very early because we are aware of the signs and know to watch her closely for them. We usually only have to treat her eyes a couple of days and they clear right up. The longer they go untreated, the worse it is and more danger of causing permanent damage to the eye. Usually Skeeter's eyes look blue or cloudy when we notice the problem. The light usually bothers her… [cont.]

Has your dog had an eye ulcer?
Q. Took my Shih Tzu to vets with sore eye, turns out it`s an ulcer in the middle of his eye. Given 2 different kinds of eye drops for 5 days, then back to vets. Fingers crossed he does`nt need eye scraped. Could it heal without any type of surgery?. Is surgery successful?.

A. corneal ulcers are very common in most pets, it can be caused by trauma to the eye (running into something, cat scratch) or sometimes cause by foreign objects like grass seeds caught under the third eyelid or even sometimes due to a hair growing on the eyelid inwards toward the eye. Depending on how bad the ulcer is and how quickly you got treatment the ulcer probably has a high chance of healing with the medication. Ensure your dog does not scratch at his eye with his back feet, if he does put an elizabethan collar on him. Make sure you follow the vets instructions and use the medication accordingly. If the dog does need its eye scraped this is a very simple procedure basically involving scratching the cornea with a scalpel which will… [cont.]
