How long should my eyes stay dialated for?
Q. I went to the eye doctor and they put a drop of eye dialation stuff in my eye yesterday at 4. My eyes are still dialated and blurry. Is this normal?
Asked by Eugene - Tue Nov 17 20:39:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. it all depends on the type of drop they put in your eye. some cycloplegics (eye dilating drops) like homatropine will last 48 hours and other will only last 2 hours. your eye specialist should have told you how long the dilation would last for, but if not, you can just call up the clinic to check if this is normal.

How can you make you eyes look dialated?
Q. i want to know how to make my eyes look dialated all the time. what can i do to do that?

A. you can't really make your eyes dilate without being in a dark room unless you use dilating drops, but those are only used for eye exams. if your eyes dilated artificially, having that much light go into your eyes will give you a headache unless you wear sunglasses. why on earth do you want to look that way anyway?

How long should it take my dialated eyes to return to normal?
Q. I had my eyes dilated yesterday pre-op for LASIK surgery. It has been 28 hours now and my eyes are still dilated and really dry. My eye doctor told me that these drops are strong but I never expected them to last this long. At what point should I be concerned?
Asked by Tanny - Tue Aug 26 19:43:57 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on what drop was used. Can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days, depending on the drop. Call the eye doctor and ask how long it should have lasted and whether you should be concerned.

Q. I just left the eye doctors and I forgot to ask them. Its 5 and I have a hockey game at 7:30. I'm putting my contacts in before then no matter what. Is that safe?

A. Of course it safe. I put my contact in the morning when I wake up and take then off when I sleep at night, disinfect them for the next morning use for more than 20 years.

how do you know if some ones eyes are dialated?
Q. i always hear that when some one is doing drugs, there puples are dialated, does that mean there are big or small?
Asked by Cactus - Thu Dec 13 21:00:38 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just because a person has large pupils does not necessarily mean they are doing drugs. Yes, certain types of drugs can dilate pupils. But then there are other types of drugs that can actually constrict pupils. In addition, some people's pupils tend to dilate quite large on their own on occasion without any drug use whatsoever. The only sure fire way to prove that someone is doing a drug is with a blood test. Hope this helped.

What could be some reasons my eyes are almost always dialated?
Q. Almost 24/7, the pupils of my eyes are sooo huge and you can only see a very thin strip of colour. Rarely do they ever look how "normal" eyes should look by themselves. Other than that they only get smaller if I'm in the sun or have taken certain medicines. Could this be related to my bad eye vision and headaches? I am NOT asking for a definite diagnosis, only possibilities. I'm trying to get into the eye doctor soon.
Asked by Vixen - Mon Oct 26 19:25:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some people naturally have larger pupils than others. It is nothing to worry about if they are both the same size. People who are near sighted have larger pupils. Some medications, usually stimulants can make your pupils larger. That includes some medications you might not expect so if you are taking any meds on a regular basis you should ask your doctor or pharmacist if that is a possibility.

Had to get my eyes dialated YESTERDAY MORNING and they STILL aren't back to normal?
Q. The woman said 3-6 hours.. Its been double or triple that. :S I don't know what to do about it? They aren't reacting to light at all or anything. :S
Asked by zafinoa - Sat Apr 18 09:43:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I recommend that you consult your eye doctor straight away and ask them about this. Generally the drops should have worn off by now or at least there should be some reaction to light. Is there any pain of redness around the coloured part of the eye (iris)? If so this is more worrisome and so you will need to seek urgent medical attention

A. Eyes are constantly contracting and dilating all the time, but I am sure that you are talking about some huge dilation. You can get a penlight (or small flashlight) and go laterally (to the side of the head and barely shine that light in that person's eyes...if they are fixed and will not constrict because of the concentrated light source, then they are abnormally dilated. Or they are on some meds that make their eyes that way like narcotics or opioids. It kind of looks freaky when their eyes won't constrict, you can really tell when it happens in the last stages of death when the eyes no longer need to shield out harmful rays of light and the eyes just completely dilate.

i have a cat that her eyes stay dialated all the time except when sunlight is shineing directly into them.?
Q. my cat acts like she cant see that well.. and i suspect partial blindness..but i wonder what brought this on all of a sudden. she is an older cat and she does not have problems going to the bathroom but she does like seem to bump into stuff a bit to "feel" her way around.
Asked by Wildcat1975 - Mon Feb 16 16:02:30 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I had a cat that was fine one day then started to bump into things, when we took her to the vet they suspected that she might have a lesion on her brain, maybe due to a stroke. That was when she was maybe 12 years old. Her sight got worse until she became totally blind, she was still able to live a full life until she died of old age, but would go everywhere in circles until she found her way. We would call her and she would follow the sound of our voices, but then unfortunately became deaf as well, that's when we had to start tapping the ground and somehow she knew to follow the vibrations!

my dogs eyes are dialated and smells and wont eat?
Q. Okay so what i need to know is what are things to look for if my dog is sick. Right now she has dilated eyes and wont eat. She is a yellow lab and 3 years old. In the last 2 weeks she has all the sudden gotten really bulky and bigger. She has a lot more muscle. We walk her and play fetch with her everyday but sitll we have been playing with her for 3 years and she has never grown any muscle. Should that be a concern or no. Also we have switched her feeding from instead of in the morning to the evening to train her to listen better and hunt too. She hasnt been hunting in about 6 months and we cant take her to the vet. Is there anything i can do to make sure she is not sick and if so what can i do at home
Asked by KK - Sat Apr 21 22:29:49 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am very concerned about the "sudden gotten really bulky and bigger"!! I do not think this is a muscle or normal weight gain you are describing. I highly suspect she is retaining water which could signal kidney failure. What you are feeling as muscle may be fluid collecting in the tissues and is very serious. This is not a "home remedy" board here. If not possible this weekend then get her seen at the vet Monday for sure. You can not treat this at home. A dog does not put on muscle all of a sudden. Have you checked out the food recall list to see if she has had the bad foods, list has been expanded and not all the answers to this mess have been resolved. You do know about the pet food recall? If she is in kidney failure or whatever… [cont.]

Q. his eyes are always dialted when inside, when he is outside they are blue with slits

A. Cats eyes dilate when the surrounding area is darker than usual. Probably, the inside of your home is a lot darker than the out-of-doors. All of my cats eyes are dilated, except the one ( spayed ) "rescue" that lives outside. She had always lived outside before we got her, and she didn't want to come into the house with the other cats, so she has everything she could possibly need...in the garage She also goes out and lies on the picnic table, in the sun, when she wants... So...your answer is...eyes dilate to see better in a darker place...not needed when out in the sunshine... Hope this helps...Good luck.

My cats eyes are watering and one is totally dialated and the other is normal and they are milky? Any ideas?
Q. She has been to the vet and has had all her shots so she is negative for all that. I don't know what to do. I'm thinking about putting her to sleep because she looks miserable but then she will be fine the next day for a day and then look bad again the next day. Any ideas? We've already tried two diffierent types of anitbiotics.

Why are one of my puppy's eyes dialated and the other one tiny?
Q. I just got home and noticed that one of my puppy's eyes were completed dialated and the other pupil was as tiny as can be. The one that was tiny is also cloudy looking. It's actually quite creepy. Does anyone know what's going on, and if it's a huge problem or something that'll go away on it's own? I've read all of your answers, and I wanted to give you an update that her tiny pupil and dialated one have both returned to it's normal size. Should I still call the vet, or is she in the clear?

A. Having your eyes dilated is technically up to you, but it is a good idea to have it done at least every 2 or 3 years. If you do get your eyes dilated, it will be after the doctor does some entrance tests and determines your prescription (the part where you look through lenses and say what is clear). Once you are dilated, the doctor will look at your eyes with the slit lamp (where you put your face in a face rest and the doctor uses a machine to shine a light in your eye) and with an ophthalmoscope (another light). Some optometrists can have you come back a different day for just the dilation at no extra cost if you are unable to do it the same day as the rest of your exam. Just feel free to talk to your doctor about your concerns… [cont.]
