my eyes are ALWAYS dialated. is that normal? is it a sign of some disease or is it a disease itself?
Q. i kid you not my eyes are dialated. sometimes you can barely see the blue around my pupil. should i be worried? it does make it hard to stand bright lights. am i normal or am i exibiting some symptom of something worse to come?

A. Some peoples pupils are naturally larger than others. Also some medications can make your pupils appear dilated. If lights and glare are bothering you though, you are probably light sensitive so you should see an ophthamologist.

How long should it take my dialated eyes to return to normal?
Q. I had my eyes dilated yesterday pre-op for LASIK surgery. It has been 28 hours now and my eyes are still dilated and really dry. My eye doctor told me that these drops are strong but I never expected them to last this long. At what point should I be concerned?
Asked by Tanny - Tue Aug 26 19:43:57 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends on what drop was used. Can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days, depending on the drop. Call the eye doctor and ask how long it should have lasted and whether you should be concerned.

how do you know if some ones eyes are dialated?
Q. i always hear that when some one is doing drugs, there puples are dialated, does that mean there are big or small?
Asked by Cactus - Thu Dec 13 21:00:38 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just because a person has large pupils does not necessarily mean they are doing drugs. Yes, certain types of drugs can dilate pupils. But then there are other types of drugs that can actually constrict pupils. In addition, some people's pupils tend to dilate quite large on their own on occasion without any drug use whatsoever. The only sure fire way to prove that someone is doing a drug is with a blood test. Hope this helped.

My eyes have always been really dialated compared to most others, is this something to worry about?
Q. Also I am extremely sensitive to light, and it's hard to see outside because its too bright. And if looking into a mirror with someone else, my eyes are way more dialated than that persons eyes... Whats this about what does it mean, is it serious problem? Will I be blind in the future? Please help

A. The size of any given part on a human being usually follows a bell curve of size. You just happen to be statistically higher then most other people. I would suggest you wear sunglasses whenever you are in the sun because there has been some evidence that your problem may put you at higher risk for cataracts. But mostly don't really worry about it, its normal (unless you are taking some sort of medication) But If you are really worried go see an eye doctor.

What happens after my eyes are dialated and it is after 5hr.?
Q. the nurse said it would go back to normal after 4hr.

A. This is a problem I have when my eyes are dilated. My optometrist uses a very weak dilating medicine, but my eyes stay dilated for at least 8 to 10 hours. Now I schedule my appointments in the evening so when I wake up, they're okay. My ophthalmologist said it usually happens to people with light eyes (mine are brown), but that since I'm so fair, that might be why it happens to me.

What could be some reasons my eyes are almost always dialated?
Q. Almost 24/7, the pupils of my eyes are sooo huge and you can only see a very thin strip of colour. Rarely do they ever look how "normal" eyes should look by themselves. Other than that they only get smaller if I'm in the sun or have taken certain medicines. Could this be related to my bad eye vision and headaches? I am NOT asking for a definite diagnosis, only possibilities. I'm trying to get into the eye doctor soon.
Asked by Vixen - Mon Oct 26 19:25:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Some people naturally have larger pupils than others. It is nothing to worry about if they are both the same size. People who are near sighted have larger pupils. Some medications, usually stimulants can make your pupils larger. That includes some medications you might not expect so if you are taking any meds on a regular basis you should ask your doctor or pharmacist if that is a possibility.

A. No honey it doesn't hurt a bit. I have had to have it done since the age of 9 (I'm 31 now). all they do is put special drops in that make your cornea react and become large. then they dim the lights and look into your eyes with that huge mess of lenses. Your doctor will have you look up and down and to the sides. When he does it to me he s looking for ruptured blood vessels behind the eye. Your eyes will be a little sensitive to light for only a short time after they are done as the effects of the drops only last for a half hour or less. There will be no pain involved what so ever. PROMISE & Cross my heart.

Had to get my eyes dialated YESTERDAY MORNING and they STILL aren't back to normal?
Q. The woman said 3-6 hours.. Its been double or triple that. :S I don't know what to do about it? They aren't reacting to light at all or anything. :S

A. I recommend that you consult your eye doctor straight away and ask them about this. Generally the drops should have worn off by now or at least there should be some reaction to light. Is there any pain of redness around the coloured part of the eye (iris)? If so this is more worrisome and so you will need to seek urgent medical attention

A. The drops they use in your eyes for the dilation procedure crosses the placenta to your baby. Whether it causes any harm or not? I don't know. I would certianly mention it your OB when you see him or her again! I also second what someone else said... it is YOUR responsibility to take care of yourself and your baby and question the safety of any medical procedure that you get during your pregnancy.

i have a cat that her eyes stay dialated all the time except when sunlight is shineing directly into them.?
Q. my cat acts like she cant see that well.. and i suspect partial blindness..but i wonder what brought this on all of a sudden. she is an older cat and she does not have problems going to the bathroom but she does like seem to bump into stuff a bit to "feel" her way around.

A. I had a cat that was fine one day then started to bump into things, when we took her to the vet they suspected that she might have a lesion on her brain, maybe due to a stroke. That was when she was maybe 12 years old. Her sight got worse until she became totally blind, she was still able to live a full life until she died of old age, but would go everywhere in circles until she found her way. We would call her and she would follow the sound of our voices, but then unfortunately became deaf as well, that's when we had to start tapping the ground and somehow she knew to follow the vibrations!

It's almost as if our eyes are trying to see as much of this person as possible. This is an involuntary and uncontrollable physiological response but it would be pretty weird saying,, that to your dad i guess

Asked by Amity - Tue Jul 17 04:49:28 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Being as dilation simply enlarges your pupil as if you were in the dark and nothing more, then no, it won't hurt your eyes. However, if your eyes are dilated, putting in your contacts probably won't do you any good. More than likely you will not be able to see fully until the dilation wears off. This should only take about 2-4 hours though. But no, dilation only causes blurred vision (sometimes only for things up close) and sensitivity to bright light. It doesn't affect your eyes in any other way. So if it's been awhile since your eyes were dilated, then go ahead and put the contacts in. You might as well wait at least the two hours though.

Q. Would it be ok to put my contacts back in, or should I wait? Thanks.
Asked by Christi - Wed Oct 8 16:54:04 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. From personal experience I wouldn't put contacts in until the next day, or at least a few hours after because the effects of the dilation lasts a few hours after the procedure. The optometrist that I go to said that there are chemicals in the dilation solution that contaminate the contact so if the contacts are put on immediately the pair would have to be thrown away that evening for a new pair in the morning. (for eye irritation purposes) This would be a time when glasses come in handy!
